Green Wheat Field Bakery Introduce
Welcome to the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, a California region renowned for its diverse culinary landscape. Among the many hidden gems that local food enthusiasts adore, one stands out for its masterful blend of traditional and contemporary Asian-style baked goods: Green Wheat Field Bakery. This beloved establishment, located right in San Gabriel, has earned a devoted following for its commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and expertly crafted pastries and breads.
For California residents seeking an authentic and delicious bakery experience, Green Wheat Field Bakery offers a compelling destination. It's more than just a place to grab a quick treat; it’s a taste of the vibrant baking traditions found across Asia, brought to life in the sunny environs of the SGV. Whether you’re starting your day with a comforting breakfast pastry or picking up a soft loaf of bread for the week, this bakery promises a product made with care and a flavor that keeps customers coming back. The bakery is particularly famous for a few signature items that have cemented its reputation, which we will explore further in this feature.
The core of Green Wheat Field Bakery's appeal lies in its celebrated baked goods. The variety of offerings is impressive, covering everything from delicate sweets to substantial, fluffy loaves. For many patrons, the Portuguese Egg Tarts, also known as Pastel de Nata, are the star attraction. These tarts, which feature a creamy custard filling and a distinctive flaky crust, are frequently praised for their magnificent taste and ideal consistency—less oily than some alternatives and boasting a perfect balance of sweetness and rich custard flavor.
In a delicious rivalry, the traditional Egg Tarts, often associated with Cantonese-style dan tat, also hold their own. While the Portuguese version is noted for its flakier, puff pastry-like shell and sweeter custard with a slightly scorched top, the traditional version at Green Wheat Field Bakery offers a "crunchier & snappier crust." This side-by-side availability allows local dessert aficionados to compare and contrast two distinct and beloved pastry traditions right in one spot.
Another must-try item that has garnered significant attention is their Sweet Toast. Described by customers as their "favorite" and praised for its incredibly soft texture, this sweet bread is a staple of Asian bakeries. The bakery offers this popular item in both half-loaf and whole-loaf sizes, providing flexibility whether you're buying a personal treat or a family-sized portion. This soft, slightly sweet bread is perfect for breakfast, a simple afternoon snack, or as a base for custom sandwiches at home. The sheer variety and consistent quality of their fresh-baked goods demonstrate the skill and dedication of the bakers at Green Wheat Field.
Beyond these fan favorites, the bakery features a wide array of other items, reflecting the rich diversity of Chinese and other Asian baking styles, including various buns, cakes, and other pastries. The consistent flow of freshly baked goods ensures that no matter what time of day you visit, you'll find something warm and delicious.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I love their Portuguese egg tarts! Cheap and the taste is magnificent 😋. It's not too oily compared to the ones I have eaten. Their sweet toast is also my favorite. I think this is the only place that sells half loaf and whole loaf. The texture of the bread is so soft 😍.
April 21 · Susana XuNovember update: I asked what time the Portuguese & egg tarts come out fresh from the oven, and luckily my next day allowed me to get them. EXCELLENT! The Portuguese tarts were more flaky and much more sweeter, while the egg tarts had a more traditional crunchier & snappier crust.September Original Review: I always walked passed this place, and never thought to come in until my friend wanted to try it out. Supposedly their Portuguese tarts were really good, so I figured why not? My friend got me some of their other breads with sausage in them as well, and they weren't bad --really good to snack on. Their Portuguese tarts though were interesting. Taste-wise, it had TONS of flavor for sure. But something about the consistency was different from what I had in Macau. When we grabbed it out of the box, it was so soft, that two of them were smushed together. The ones I had in Macau were more flaky, and piping hot fresh. Not to say that these are bad, but they were different. Flaky, yes, but more soft than flaky. I wonder how they would be first thing in the morning right out of the oven though? Also wonder how often they bake new batches.
August 20 · 龔振勝Love their custard tarts and fluffy toasts. Came here too late so all their tarts were sold out but I got their coconut tarts, which were also good! Solid pastries all around.
December 16 · Amy YThe bread at this bakery is good, and I enjoy it. However, I wouldn’t recommend ordering cakes from them. We ordered a cake on Wednesday in person to pick up on Sunday at noon, but when I arrived at 1:30 pm, they had forgotten to make it. They told us to come back at 4 pm, but our party was over by 3 pm, so it was too late. I also saw other reviews mentioning similar issues with forgotten orders. It’s disappointing because the bread is nice, but the service with cakes could be much better.
July 07 · Cecilia YanDefinitely a neighborhood gem in SGV. My friend has been bragging about their egg tarts and Cha Shao Bao ( BBQ pork bun) for awhile. I finally had a chance to visit the bakery today. My friend was right, their egg tarts looked very good and massive and the price is less than $2. The crust was very crispy and the egg fillings was mouth watering good. The Cha Shao Bao’s were very tasty too. They make them like the ones in Hong Kong. The BBQ pork fillings were very flavorful and tasty. The buns were fluffy too. That’s a great combination for a good bun. The price for the BBQ pork bun is also very reasonable. No body can beat their prices let alone their taste.I also got the cocktail bun as well. The bun was very fluffy and the filling inside with shredded coconut was so good. You can’t get this kind of taste from a dim sum restaurant. Like my friend said, “ this is my kind of bakery that gives good quality, great value and taste for their products”.They bakery has other Asian sweet breads too. We didn’t have a chance to try them out. Will be back for more. We definitely will be frequenting this bakery more .For fellow Yelpers who check in on Yelp app, with minimum of $1 purchase, you can get a free ice milk tea. That’s a good deal.Parking is easy, plenty of spots on the street and in the back.
