Gusto Bread Introduce
## Introduction / Overview
For California residents searching for truly authentic, high-quality baked goods, Gusto Bread in Long Beach offers a destination unlike any other. This acclaimed establishment is more than just a typical bakery; it is an organic panadería that celebrates the best of Latin American and European baking traditions. By focusing on nourishment, creativity, and tradition, Gusto Bread has cultivated a deeply loyal following and has earned national recognition, including being named one of Food & Wine’s Top 100 Bakeries in America.
Gusto Bread’s philosophy centers around wild fermentation—or masa madre (sourdough)—using whole ingredients, stone-milled flours, and local produce. This commitment to traditional, long-fermented methods results in bread that is rich in flavor and texture, prompting even self-proclaimed bread snobs, like one German customer, to call it "craftsmanship" that tastes "so close to home."
What truly distinguishes Gusto Bread is the harmonious blend of cultures reflected in its menu. You'll find European-style sourdough loaves, such as the California Loaf and Field Loaf, alongside beloved pan dulce and pastries like the Concha De Cacao, Guava Pastelito, and Alfajores. This Latino-owned business creates a warm and inviting setting for the local community, welcoming everyone to visit and experience a sweet or savory moment in Long Beach.

## Features and Highlights
The heart of Gusto Bread's appeal lies in its commitment to high-quality ingredients and the mastery of its baking process. This has resulted in several distinct features and highlighted menu items that draw people from across Southern California:
- Masa Madre / Wild Fermentation: All their loaves, including the popular California Loaf and hearty Field Loaf (made with rye, spelt, and wheat), are 100% wild-fermented. This long, 30+ hour process, known as masa madre or sourdough, is a central tenet of their commitment to deep flavor and digestibility.
- Unique Latin American Pastries: Gusto Bread is a must-visit for its pan dulce. Signature pastries like the Concha De Cacao, the buttery and savory Bolillo De Jalapeño Y Cheddar, and the decadent Alfajores (a five-pack of Argentinian sandwich cookies) showcase the bakery’s unique cultural heritage and baking creativity.
- The Seasonal Pan de Uva: A highly anticipated highlight is the seasonal Pan De Uva 🍇 (Grape Focaccia), a sweet and savory focaccia made with plump organic grapes, rosemary, and honey. This special item is a perfect representation of their use of local, seasonal produce.
- Gourmet Pantry and Artisan Goods: The shop doubles as a carefully curated marketplace. Customers can purchase locally roasted Café Cuate coffee beans (Reserva Kukipata, Sierra Morena, Rosa Aymara), unique pantry items like Rancho Gordo Heirloom Beans and Taco María: Chile Ancho Salsa Negra, and specialty kitchen tools like the 'Laguiole' Bread Knife.
- Commitment to Ingredients: Gusto’s bread is primarily vegan, made with just flour, water, and salt, plus seeds depending on the variety. This focus on pure, simple ingredients assures a high-quality, nourishing product.

Gusto Bread Reviews
conchaloafhominybreads and pastriesempanadabolillomolecafe de ollabaked breadpan de muerto
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I‘m German so I’m very picky with the type of bread I like (and let’s be honest, most „bread“ sold in the US is a disgrace to the original product). I came to Gusto today for the first time and purchased a great looking sourdough loaf. The employee was very knowledgeable and explained all the different type of breads they had available. It was a busy day but he took his time with us. When I cut the bread later at home, I almost teared up. This tastes so close to home and brought back a taste I haven’t experienced for the 5 years I’m living overseas. This is craftsmanship, THANK YOU - your work is highly appreciated and I’m proud to live in a neighborhood with you guys. I will become a regular.
July 09 · Jessica BeckGreat customer service. Loved the bolillo, empanada and alfajores. Really all their pastries are top notch. The coffee on the other hand was lackluster and overpriced. I was excited to try the atole latte, but the maiz cream did not add any flavor. The special matcha was just alright. But would definitely go back for the baked goods. They have specials on day old bread as well.
July 25 · v gbBest Mexican bakery in California—and not just for traditional pastries. Gusto Bread is a Mexican-influenced artisan bakery, not your average panadería. It’s a fusion that feels just right: thoughtful, balanced, and full of flavor.Let’s start with what makes it stand out: it’s not overly sweet. Unlike most American bakeries that rely on sugar bombs and artificial sweeteners, Gusto lets the real ingredients shine. My taste buds have always been sensitive to that overwhelming sugary assault, so this place? It’s a revelation.I don’t just want sugar—I want texture, layered flavors, creative touches, visual delight, complex aroma, crunch, softness, and yes, even that little moan that comes when food is just that good. Gusto delivers.Take the homemade chocolate cookie—dark chocolate, rich and bold, not that cloying milk chocolate nonsense. Then the oreja—flaky, buttery, and light, the perfect heart-shaped crisp I immediately wanted more of. The alfajor de nuez? It crumbles, then melts, blending nutty warmth with just the right touch of creamy dulce de leche. That’s a party. The cacao concha is hands-down the best I’ve ever had—and I grew up in East LA, it's practically an unofficial Mexican Town in CA. But the true standout is the Nixtamal Queen. It’s lightly sweet, intriguingly sticky, and the softness is irresistible. One bite turns into two… then three. I should’ve bought more.Do the pastries look just as beautiful as they tasted divine? Yes, they do. Each one is a visual feast—intentional, artistic, and mouthwatering before you even take a bite.If I had one note: skip the croissants. They’re fine, but average—and let’s be real, I didn’t come to a Mexican bakery expecting French patisserie perfection. That’s not a fault, just a boundary of the genre.Bottom line: Come hungry. Try everything. Don’t skip the Nixtamal Queen. Gusto Bread is where tradition meets innovation, and every bite is an experience. No wonder the New York Times puts Gusto Bread on their list of 22 of the best bakeries in America.
June 13 · Isekai TomaOrdered the Nixtamal Queen and Jamon Roll. I really liked the former - crunchy and doughy, with savory corn masada in the middle. Definitely the star between the two. I enjoyed the jamon, however, not full of meat or flavor inside the pastry, so the opposite of the Nixtamal Queen, which is packed with flavor and texture. Gusto lives up to the label as a world-class bakery. Excited to try the other menu items. There was a consistent line around 12 pm, and some menu items will sell out, so come early!
July 12 · Mike PWe didn’t intend on coming here, but it was an opportunity to try Gusto since there was barely any line on the Saturday morning. We dropped in and grabbed a few bites. Overall, the jamon pastry was really good. The surprising Dijon mustard hit very well and the starch of the bread gives a nice balance to it. My favorite of them all.The cheddar jalapeño bread was delicious as well. Very fluffy and has a lot of flavor. If you are savory lover, you should get this one.The Mole empanada was also great. They pack in a lot in that pastry.Very grateful to have the chance to try Gusto. I was lucky that there wasn’t any line but now I see why there is a long line each time.
