What is Worth Choosing
For a California local seeking a truly special bakery experience, Hamada-Ya Bakery in Irvine is worth choosing for its authentic Japanese flair and exceptional dedication to soft bread textures. What makes this bakery stand out is its mastery of
Shokupan
and the unique products derived from it, a category of bread prized for its unparalleled softness and slight sweetness—a sensory experience that is often sought after and rarely perfected in non-Japanese bakeries.Patrons should prioritize the items that showcase this baking philosophy. The
Cream Pan
, a pillowy soft bun filled with sweet, smooth custard, is a standout that exemplifies the 'made with TLC' quality mentioned in customer reviews. Similarly, theMelon Pan
is a popular choice, providing a delightful contrast with its soft interior and thin, sugary, cookie-like crust.Beyond the sweets, Hamada-Ya excels in savory innovations. The
Wagyu Curry Donut
—a soft, slightly sweet fried bread pocket filled with savory, rich Wagyu beef curry—is a truly authentic and satisfying deli bread that provides a unique and substantial meal. For those looking for everyday staples, the loaves of bread are perfect for recreating popular Japanese home dishes, such asTamago Sando
(egg salad sandwich), which requires the signature soft and fluffyShokupan
base. Finally, the beverage menu is not to be overlooked, offering a perfect complement to the pastries. Whether it's a smooth
Matcha Soft Serve
or the intriguing, nutty flavor of aKinako Milk Tea
(made from roasted soybean flour), the drinks menu provides an excellent way to fully immerse in the Japanese café experience. In essence, Hamada-Ya is the go-to Irvine destination for exceptional, authentically Japanese-style baked goods, from comforting sweets to satisfying savory deli fare, all delivered with the convenience expected in a modern California shopping environment.Hamada-Ya Bakery Vibe

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I ordered two cream pans and let me say it doesn't disappoint. So if you love creamy custard filling folded into buttery bread that is made with TLC, then Hamada-Ya Bakery is the place to go. Now let's say you eat one and save the other for the next day, I suggest refrigerating it. Then when you want to eat it take it out of the fridge and let it sit until it's room temperature. Your taste buds are going to be very happy you did. 😉
August 12 · Liza HallStopped by to pick up a melon pan and a loaf of shokupan, but also was curious about the iced kinako milk tea.Melon pan was surprisingly pleasant. The crust had a light crisp and sprinkled with granulated sugar. It's no melon pan from Asakusa's Kagetsudo, but it'll do!I got a full flavor of kinako my first few sips. However, as I got to the bottom, I could see undissolved sugar and kinako powder at the bottom. So execution was lacking. Finally, the shokupan was soft and fluffy. Can't complain as it made for a killer tamago sando!
April 27 · Matt MonTop picks: Strawberry Cheesecake Danish & Spicy Curry Donut. An absolute must whenever I'm here. My boyfriend loves their strawberry cheesecake Danish pastries, but my recent favorites have been the Almond Danish and spicy curry donut. The curry packs some heat, which was surprising because I feel most "spicy" Japanese dishes are relatively mild for my taste buds.Other items that I like, but haven't had a ton of repeats have been the custard pudding, bavarian chocolate, mixed fruit tart and red bean cream bun. It's not because they weren't good, but I had my eyes on the strawberry danishes. They always sell out if you come later in the day. However, I think I may try to venture out of my norm on my next visit.
June 08 · Jamie NI saw on Yelp that this place had green tea soft serve, so I was excited. Have to say I was pretty disappointed.I got the green tea and vanilla mixed soft serve, which I do have to say was rather cheap, but not the best quality. The soft serve was really icy and not like that creamy soft serve texture that you can get at other places. One nice thing was that they put Cinnamon Toast Crunch at the bottom of the soft serve, which actually worked really well with the ice cream. Will definitely be keeping this in mind when I get ice cream now. However, the overall quality was not that good.I didn't get any of their pastries, but some did look good. May come back to try them out, but their soft serve doesn't really deserve this much praise.
June 20 · Paulina LeiThe soft serve ice cream is decent, what you would expect for soft serve. The green tea flavor is not strong so if you are expecting a green tea flavorful treat, you should try elsewhere.
