What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Happy Donuts means opting for a place where tradition meets great value and consistent quality, a rare find in the hustle of downtown San Francisco. It's an establishment that has clearly earned its local status by prioritizing substance over unnecessary flash. When deciding what to choose, look beyond the simple name to the impressive range of offerings and the strong local endorsements.
First, the sweet treats are a non-negotiable choice. The legendary Apple Fritter is the single most praised item—its substantial size and delicious flavor are noted in multiple customer reviews, confirming its status as a high-value, must-try indulgence. Beyond the fritter, a selection of the classic donuts, such as the Raised or Old Fashioned varieties, are perfect for experiencing the shop's core, traditional baking quality. For an affordable sampler, the Donut Holes are a great choice.
Second, the shop's versatility as a savory stop is another major reason to visit. For breakfast or lunch, the Sandwich Menu offers a compelling alternative to pricier, nearby eateries. The breakfast sandwiches are highly recommended, largely due to the use of real eggs, setting a high bar for quality in a quick-serve setting. Options like the Turkey+Bacon sandwich provide a satisfying and filling meal. Meanwhile, the range of deli sandwiches—from Smoked Ham to Pastrami and Roast Beef—ensure a solid and dependable lunch choice.
Finally, for those needing a beverage, the Great Coffee is another highlight. Whether you prefer a regular brew or an espresso-based drink like the Matcha Green Tea Latte, the quality is consistently good. Customers specifically mention that even the specialty lattes are not overly sweet, which is a significant plus for those who prefer a more balanced flavor profile.
In essence, Happy Donuts is worth choosing because it provides an authentic, affordable, and high-quality experience. It is a genuine local spot that delivers on its promise of fresh donuts, real ingredients, and great coffee, all served in a no-frills, casual setting. For Californians navigating the San Francisco food scene, this shop offers excellent value and a guaranteed smile. Don't let the unassuming exterior deter you; as one customer noted, "Never judge a book by its cover." Happy Donuts is a downtown classic, and a choice you’ll be happy you made.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Cash only, but quality service and real eggs. The donut was good also. Never judge a book by its cover. The coffee was okay, not bad. Much better than the motor oil in the hotel. Low key, Happy Donut on Ellis will be seen again soon.
June 08 · C (ChicagoCoors)Apple fritter size is huge and generous. It is nice.I also bought matcha green tea latte, there is no “no sugar” option, but it is not too sweet, still taste nice to my liking :)Price is affordable in SF
May 10 · Amanda HalimNo frills is an apt description of this store. But I've had many many apple fritters in my life, and this is a top apple fritter. Nice crisp, not greasy, apple flavor, it's a winner. Cash only.
March 29 · Jeff GottdownunderNext time I’m in town I will resume my morning ritual of a breakfast sandwich and an apple fritter, both of which are every bit as good as one might hope. I have a local friend who is very proud of her city who brought me a fritter from another donut place asking for a comparison and there is really no competition. Happy’s fritter is crispy and delicious through and through and I’ve had a couple of them this week. And they’re huge! This one in the picture is after I’ve already gone to work on it. Not just best donuts in town, simply the best donuts ♡
February 05 · Will IraceA place you can afford to eat in San Francisco!TL:DRThis small, locally run shop has great homemade pastries, donuts, etc. and they make a delicious breakfast sandwich for about $8 (as of September of 2023).If you are looking for a price break from the fancy San Francisco fare, check this out for breakfast.Details:Be warned, this is on the edge of what was referred to by some locals as the "tender-fringe". Right outside of the Tenderloin district, which we were repeatedly warned to avoid completely. If you are walking here, don't continue on past this spot. There were no concerns in the immediate area, but continuing toward Tenderloin is not advisable. They had a buttermilk donut which was huge and amazing! Definitely try it!The breakfast sandwich here was nothing special, no exorbitant spices or fancy cheeses, just fresh cooked egg, cheese, and meat. And it's great! The women running the shop were very friendly, and patient as I decided what I wanted. It was so nice to have an affordable breakfast spot close to our hotel. They are CASH ONLY as many of the local places are, but they do have an ATM in store.Take a break from the overpriced tourist spots and grab a breakfast bite here!
