What is Worth Choosing
For any Pennsylvania local or visitor searching for an authentic, time-tested bakery experience, Holmesburg Bakery is truly worth choosing for several compelling reasons. The single most important reason is their Cream Donut. Customer testimonials are overwhelming and consistent: this donut is frequently described as the best people have ever had. It is a defining feature of the bakery, and a must-try item that justifies a trip to the Northeast. One customer’s glowing review perfectly sums up the sentiment: "The powdered donut with cream filling is the best! Donuts are priced normally (about $2 each) and the workers are extremely nice." Another drives "well over an hour consistently to get a dozen" and stated they would choose the cream donut as their only dessert for the rest of their life.
Beyond the iconic donut, the bakery's historical reliability and versatility make it a go-to choice for all occasions. For special events, their custom cakes and the renowned Strawberry Shortcake are standout items. The strawberry shortcake, for instance, is noted for being "particularly the perfect cake, not too sweet— just the perfect amount of cream and strawberries." For a rich morning treat or an afternoon indulgence, their Butter Cake and Chocolate Rods are incredibly popular.
The bakery also excels in fulfilling large-scale orders with professionalism and quality, making it a dependable partner for local businesses and schools, as one customer mentioned: "Holmesburgh always comes through for very large orders for us at NEHS. I can't say enough positive things about them. The students and staff love when it's Donut Day!" This capacity for volume without sacrificing quality is a significant indicator of their professional operation.
The welcoming atmosphere, friendly service, and the tangible sense of history only enhance the experience. By choosing Holmesburg Bakery, you are not just buying a pastry; you are engaging with a genuine piece of Philadelphia’s culinary heritage, supported by over a hundred years of dedicated, family-owned service to the local community. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Went here during the afternoon to grab a quick bite and safe to say I will be coming back. The powdered donut with cream filling is the best! I also recommend the cake with strawberries, it’s particularly the perfect cake, not too sweet— just the perfect amount of cream and strawberries too! Donuts are priced normally (about $2 each) and the workers are extremely nice❤️
August 13 · hannaHolmesburgh always comes through for very large orders for us at NEHS. I can't say enough positive things about them. The students and staff love when it's Donut Day!
June 12 · Devan StrattonWe got cookies, a muffin, cream donuts, and irish soda bread to share - all delicious and reasonably priced.
March 16 · Jack HerrBakery opens 7:00 am on Sunday. 7:05 I ask for 3 cheese danish, young lady says only two left. I said it’s only 7:05 , you just opened. How are you sold out already ? They said they were sold out by orders. I stated that they should make more for other people coming in. Poor management. No reason to be sold out this soon. Save your money. Poor selection. Rather buy a tasty cake
July 14 · James NuskyMoved into the area and my first visit to highly recommended bakery! My hubby's birthday today, so I bought him the 5***** creme donut! Which he says is 5*! Nobody mentioned in the reviews that special holiday German treats (see photos) could be found here at the bakery! My mother has German heritage, so I've heard about them my whole life, but I have never seen them! Butter cake has always been popular in my family as well and we be acquired on my next visit!!
