What is Worth Choosing
For anyone in North Carolina seeking an authentic, high-quality, small-business experience, Joan's Sourdough Bread in Lenoir is unequivocally worth the visit. The primary draw is the **Appalachian-style sourdough**, a softer, delicious bread that has won over countless customers who describe its texture as being "softer than a pillow!" If you haven't experienced this distinct regional style of sourdough, this is the place to try it.
Beyond the signature bread, the experience is worth choosing for the quality of the **deli sandwiches**. Using their incredibly fresh buns as a base for high-quality Boar's Head meats and homemade specialties like the **Handmade Pimento Cheese** or **Homestyle Chicken Salad** makes for a lunch that rivals any local deli. The promise of a truly fresh sandwich, prepared with care, makes it a top choice for a quick meal.
Finally, the homemade **desserts**, particularly the **Fried Apple Pies** and the rich **Peanut Butter Cheesecake**, are reason enough for a detour. These are not mass-produced treats; they are comforting, traditional baked goods that evoke a sense of nostalgia and home, as noted by customers. Choosing Joan's means supporting a friendly, family-run business that puts quality, freshness, and community charm into every loaf and every sweet treat they offer.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I was traveling through the area and this was such a pleasant surprise! I didn't grab lunch, but I did grab snacks for later.Everything I tried was delicious and tasted so fresh! The peanut butter cheesecake was smooth and rich. The fried apple pie was still pretty light for being a fried product. And the cinnamon roll (warmed for about 30 seconds in the microwave) really balanced icing with actually having food cinnamon flavor which gets lost in more processed cinnamon rolls. Will definitely stop by for a sandwich the next time in Lenoir!
April 04 · Jessie CartyLove this place Run by a grandfather and his granddaughter Really sweet people. The sourdough bread is softer than a pillow! Fried pies taste like Mt Granny's! Got a sourdough brownie Wonderful. Icing tasted like fudge. Definitely worth checking out!!!!!!
August 25 · Pearl YounceCan’t believe how many times I have driven by and didn’t know it was there. Absolutely fantastic sandwiches. Will be back for deserts and sourdough rolls soon.
July 18 · Lowell HallMy kids and I loved our sandwiches. The bread is so soft and delicious, we brought a loaf home for the week. My kids always manage to squish store bought bread, but the texture of this bread bounced right back after my 5 year old hugging it. We will be back!
April 03 · Nicole BolgrinNo sandwiches being made today, so we bought bread, a tub of chicken salad, and a tub of pimento spread. Went and had a picnic in the shade at the library. Delicious!
