Katella Bakery, Deli & Restaurant Introduce
For over 50 years, Katella Bakery, Deli & Restaurant has stood as a celebrated landmark in Los Alamitos, representing the quintessential blending of a full-service, family-friendly restaurant with an incredible, European-style scratch bakery and a traditional Jewish deli. This Orange County institution, established by Sam and Shirley, who brought their rich Eastern European culinary traditions to California, is an absolute must-visit destination for anyone in the region seeking authentic, high-quality food in a warm, welcoming setting. This is not just a place to eat; it’s a cultural experience where the best of New York deli classics meets a breathtaking array of fresh-baked goods.
Katella Bakery, Deli & Restaurant is legendary for preparing virtually all of its items from scratch. This dedication means their corned beef and pastrami are cooked on the premises, the bagels are mixed, aged, boiled, and baked in-house, and a portion of the original "mother dough" still starts every loaf of rye and challah bread. With over 200 items baked daily by a team working around the clock, the quality is truly palpable, as customers often note that the food is "Amazzzzzzing" and the pastries are "sooo Good." While the expansive menu covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the combined Deli and Bakery sections ensure that every taste—from savory Matzo Ball Soup to delectable Black Forest Cake—is catered to with traditional care and expertise.
The atmosphere is comfortable, spanning a sprawling facility filled with booths, bar stools, and friendly servers. It successfully marries the old-school charm of a classic deli with the convenience and service options modern California diners expect. While some visitors acknowledge that the pricing is on the higher side, they universally agree that if you are willing to pay the price for authentic, superior quality food and an experience that honors decades of tradition, the visit is "most likely worth it." Katella continues to draw thousands of regular patrons daily, a testament to the enduring success of quality, tradition, and exceptional service.

September 18 · Anna HernandezWe went Saturday evening around 730, and there was minimal wait to get seated.Service was good. Food tasted great. Those onion rings were really crispy, and the ranch that came with it was perfect. The sandwiches tasted great.I was just sad that good bagels were out, and the pricing on food is a bit high, but if you are willing to pay the price, it's most likely worth it.
May 18 · Jenny LeeI’ve been disappointed last couple times I’ve come here. The atmosphere is nice and the employees are pleasant but the food always seems to disappoint. I ordered the Chicken Alfredo today and it tasted just like the Lean Cuisine version. So if you like Lean Cuisine Chicken Alfredo, you should come here.
September 22 · Cory DesselleI came to this restaurant around 11 a.m., and it was busy. Which is a good sign for any business. We did have to wait about 20 minutes to receive our food. As i looked around, i didn't see any worker standing around. They were all busy working their own stations. I was glad to see that even though they were busy, there wasn't a sign of trash on the floors, empty tables, or restrooms. There wasnt any stains on the floors, tables. This restaurant seems to be very big on cleanliness.
March 25 · Noemy ZamarripaKatella Deli Bakery & Restaurant is a feast for the eyes and the palate. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a stunning display of freshly baked bread, pastries, and desserts. The bakery is truly a dessert lover’s dream—so much so that it’s hard to choose where to start! The atmosphere is beautiful and inviting, making it a perfect spot for dates, family gatherings, or a relaxed meal. However, despite the amazing ambiance and food selection, our experience was marred by an incredibly long wait for our orders—over 30 minutes. It genuinely felt like our orders had been forgotten. By the time the food arrived, my hunger had passed, and I could barely eat half of my sandwich, which was truly disappointing. The manager did come over to apologize and offered a complimentary slice of cheesecake, which was a kind gesture, but no customer should have to wait that long, especially when they’re hungry. While the food was good and the cheesecake was appreciated, the wait time detracted from an otherwise perfect experience. If it weren’t for that awful wait, Katella would have earned a 5-star review from me. Hopefully, this was just an off day for their service because the potential for an amazing dining experience is definitely there.PS: Apparently it wasn’t an off day. It’s June 9, 2025 and I am here again. We’ve been waiting for over 40 minutes (and counting). 😢
