Keki Modern Cakes Introduce
best japanese cheesecake nyc
Welcome to the heart of New York’s vibrant Chinatown, where culinary surprises are a daily discovery. Among the many hidden gems and beloved institutions, there's a modern bakery that has captured the hearts and taste buds of locals and visitors alike: Keki Modern Cakes. This isn't your traditional corner bakery; it's a destination for a truly unique dessert experience. Keki is best known for bringing the Japanese "bouncy" cheesecake sensation to New York, a light, airy, and impossibly jiggly cake that's a world away from the dense, rich cheesecakes New Yorkers are accustomed to.
The buzz around Keki isn't just about the novelty of a jiggly cake. It's about a commitment to quality and a passion for creating a dessert that is both visually mesmerizing and incredibly delicious. Each cake is a testament to careful craftsmanship, baked with high-quality ingredients like locally sourced organic grass-fed milk, Amish cream cheese, and organic free-range eggs. The result is a dessert that melts in your mouth, leaving a delicate, rich flavor without the heaviness of a conventional cake. Whether you're a lifelong New Yorker or just passing through, a visit to Keki Modern Cakes offers a fresh perspective on what a cheesecake can be.
A trip to Keki Modern Cakes is more than just buying a dessert; it’s an experience. The moment you see their cheesecakes—steaming hot, fresh from the oven, and bouncing with a delightful wobble—you understand the hype. The bakery’s success is built on this unique product, which has garnered a loyal following and a reputation for being a must-try dessert in the city. While the line outside can sometimes be long, as one customer noted, the friendly and helpful staff make the wait worthwhile, often offering tips on how to best enjoy your fresh-baked treat. This combination of a remarkable product and a warm, inviting atmosphere is what makes Keki a true standout in New York's competitive food scene.
Keki Modern Cakes has found its perfect home in Chinatown, a neighborhood celebrated for its diverse and authentic culinary landscape. The bakery is located at 79 Mott Street, New York, NY 10013, placing it in a bustling area easily reachable from multiple parts of the city. For those using public transportation, the shop is a short walk from several subway stations, including the Canal Street stops for the J, N, Q, R, W, and 6 lines. This central location makes it an ideal stop after a day of exploring downtown Manhattan, whether you've been to the Lower East Side, Little Italy, or are simply wandering through the vibrant streets of Chinatown itself.
The accessibility extends beyond its subway proximity. The bakery is situated on a well-known street, making it easy to find for those navigating on foot. Its presence in Chinatown also means it’s surrounded by other fantastic food and cultural experiences, allowing you to easily build a full itinerary around your visit. Its convenient location is a major reason why many locals, even those from other parts of the tri-state area, consider it a worthwhile and frequent stop. The ease of getting there means you're never too far from satisfying your craving for a soft, bouncy cheesecake.
Keki Modern Cakes offers a carefully curated menu that focuses on a few exceptional items, ensuring every product is crafted to perfection. Their flagship offering is, of course, the Bouncy Cheesecake, a Japanese-inspired soufflé-style cake that is famously light and airy. In addition to this classic, they offer a variety of other unique and delicious treats that cater to different tastes.
- Fancy Cheesecake: A take on the classic New York-style cheesecake, but with a Keki twist. This three-layer mousse cheesecake is more labor-intensive and is meant to be served frozen, offering a different, yet equally delightful, texture and flavor profile.
- Castella: A traditional Japanese sponge cake known for its delicate, fluffy texture and light sweetness. It's a perfect choice for those who prefer a dessert that isn't overly rich.
- Cream Puffs: These are not your average cream puffs. Keki’s versions are filled with rich, creamy fillings in unique flavors.
- Blazing Cheesecake: A unique recreation of the Basque cheesecake from Spain, with a rich, creamy taste and a silky-soft texture.
- Seasonal and Special Flavors: Keki regularly introduces special flavors to its menu, such as the Ube Bouncy Cheesecake or a Green Tea Fancy Cheesecake, offering customers new and exciting options to try.
The bakery’s focus on a limited menu allows them to excel in each category. By perfecting their recipes and using high-quality ingredients, Keki has built a reputation for excellence. Each item is made with a meticulous attention to detail, resulting in desserts that are both innovative and incredibly satisfying. The variety, while focused, ensures there's something to please every palate, whether you're a fan of traditional flavors or seeking a new culinary adventure.
Keki Modern Cakes stands out for several key features that set it apart from other bakeries in New York. The most notable highlight is their unique approach to baking and their signature product, the bouncy cheesecake.
- The "Bouncy" Cheesecake: This is the star of the show. The name comes from the cake's unique, jiggly texture, which is a result of a special baking process that incorporates a delicate meringue and a water bath. The cake is soft, fluffy, and melts in your mouth, a stark contrast to the heavy, dense cheesecakes most people are used to.
- High-Quality Ingredients: Keki prides itself on using premium ingredients, including Amish cream cheese and organic eggs. This commitment to quality is evident in the rich, clean flavor of their products.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: Customers frequently praise the staff for being exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. They are happy to explain the difference between the various cakes and provide tips on how to handle and enjoy them, enhancing the overall customer experience.
- A Cultural Blend: Keki successfully blends Japanese baking techniques with a New York sensibility. The result is a product that feels both authentic to its inspiration and perfectly at home in the diverse culinary landscape of NYC.
- Freshness is Key: The bakery is known for serving their cheesecakes fresh out of the oven. This focus on serving warm, just-baked goods adds to the unique experience, ensuring you get the product at its very best. As one customer noted, getting a cheesecake that just came out of the oven is a memorable treat.
These features, from the innovative products to the focus on customer service, all contribute to Keki Modern Cakes' reputation as a must-visit destination. The bakery has created a niche for itself by offering something truly different and executing it flawlessly. It’s not just a place to grab a quick pastry; it's a place to experience a new kind of dessert.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- In the past, I would see a line outside the door of this bakery; I finally gave it a try when it was empty. By the time I was checking out, there was a line out the door. Since it was my first time trying their cheesecake, I asked the cashier what’s the difference between the 2 popular ones. She was so nice & took the time to explain the difference. She ended up giving me one that just came out of the oven & warned me to not shake the box too much since it was still fresh & it could lean & get ruined. I was given some spoons & I ended up trying it right once I got inside the car. It was so delicious & it melted in your mouth. I forced my friends to try a bite full & we all loved it. Every time I go to New York, I’ll be making this extra stop at this bakery. It is so delicious & I can’t stop thinking about it since no local bakeries in my area (PA) bakes it as delicious as this location. May 19 · Melii
- So delicious😋!Rich cheese aroma, delicate taste melts in your mouth! It's the best light cheesecake I've ever had in New York, will keep coming back to try other flavors. March 09 · Louise (FareFortuna)
- Wow, much more tasty than I thought. I bought a box of a pair of Ube, Cookies and Cream and Pistachio since it was $10 for 3. Thought they were much tastier than Papa Beard’s cream puffs. Would visit again. Worker also was quick and informed me to put in fridge after 3 hours if not finished. January 04 · L L
- Got the ube cream puff and cookie and cream puff. Staff is super friendly. The flavor is really good, overall not too sweet. Filling is very creamy but outside is still crispy. So much filling. $4 after tax October 02 · Anton S.
- This was my first time trying the bouncy cheesecake, and it was so unbelievably delicious. It's light, fluffy and not very sweet. It's better than any other cheesecake that I have ever tried, in my opinion. I was able to try both the original and Ube, and like the Ube one better. March 14 · Slava Kramarov
