Kvarnstrom Bakery Introduce
Nestled within the scenic, rolling hills of Vernon County, Wisconsin, the town of Westby holds a deep-seated connection to its Norwegian heritage. No local business embodies this cultural richness quite like Kvarnstrom Bakery. Located discreetly on Coon Prairie Road, this establishment is an absolute treasure for residents and visitors alike, offering an unparalleled taste of authentic Scandinavian and traditional Wisconsin baking. It’s not a sprawling, anonymous storefront; rather, it’s a dedicated, charming operation run by the "super nice couple," Joyce Quarnstrom and Gordon Vande Voorde, whose passion for quality ingredients and family recipes shines through every baked good they create.
For those unfamiliar with the specific address, Kvarnstrom Bakery operates from a dedicated, custom-built space—often described as a small, red building—situated behind the owners' personal residence at the Coon Prairie Road address. This unique, low-key setting contributes directly to the "down-home" feel and the highly personalized service that local patrons have come to cherish. The motto of the bakery, “A Taste of Scandinavia,” is a promise kept daily, offering residents of Westby and the wider 54667 area access to treats they might otherwise only find through their own family's ancestral recipes. This article serves as a guide for local Wisconsin users to navigate the specialized service model and extensive offerings of this truly unique Vernon County bakery.
Introduction / Overview: Westby’s Scandinavian Baking Heritage
Kvarnstrom Bakery is categorized simply as a Bakery, but this designation barely scratches the surface of its specialization. It is, at its heart, a dedicated source for authentic, made-from-scratch Scandinavian delicacies, alongside beloved American and local favorites. As a business operating out of Westby, known as a Norwegian settlement in Wisconsin, the bakery plays a vital cultural role, preserving and sharing traditional recipes. The operation is primarily focused on custom, large-format, and pre-ordered goods, with about half of its total production dedicated to Scandinavian specialties. This focus has secured its reputation across the state as a premier destination for genuine, high-quality ethnic baking.
The bakery’s product line is extensive and deeply rooted in heritage. Highly sought-after Scandinavian items include: the potato flatbread lefse, the intricate ring cake kransekake (often made with 18 rings and decorated for Norwegian celebrations like weddings or Christmas), the delicate wafer-like krumkake, the rolled cookies known as strulls, and the boat-shaped sandbakkels. Beyond the Norwegian specialties, their baked goods portfolio extends into general American comfort classics, ensuring that every customer finds something to love. This includes a full range of pies, coffeecakes, various rolls (like caramel and pecan), muffins, and an incredible assortment of cookies. The owners are also known to lovingly prepare special requests, sometimes using cherished family recipes brought in by customers from their own ancestors.

Services Offered (The Bake-to-Order Model)

- Takeout: This is the official service option for collecting all orders. Whether a pre-order or a spontaneous purchase of limited "on-hand" goods, the entire transaction is structured around quick and efficient takeout service directly from the bakery location.
- Nationwide Shipping: A significant service highlight, the bakery ships its non-perishable baked goods anywhere in the United States. This is an immense benefit for Wisconsin residents who wish to send authentic Scandinavian treats as gifts to family members living outside the state, or for customers who have moved away but still crave their famous products.

Kvarnstrom Bakery Reviews
Bakery is located behind a personal residence, preorders are preferred or buy what’s on hand. Owner is a very charming Lady.
September 02 · Kevin LoomisLOVED, LOVED this place. We found this on the 'Only in Your State app (that really needs to be updated tho). The hours are not correct on it. The SUPER NICE couple that runs the bakery are mostly doing online orders since covid now, so call before going if you want to go in person. They welcomed us in anyway and shared stories as well as some treats they had on hand. I had some most incredible samples there and will be ordering soon as they ship anywhere in the US. You won't regret it!
March 20 · Sheila IpsenThe bakery is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays but it’s best to order ahead. The bakery is in a small building behind the house. The baked goods are delicious…this couple make it worth the stop. They are truly delightful!
