L’Appartement 4F Introduce
In a city known for its exceptional bakeries, there's always a new gem that captures the attention and affection of locals. In the West Village, that gem is undoubtedly L’Appartement 4F. This bakery, which has quickly become a must-try destination, is a testament to the power of a simple, well-executed idea: bringing authentic, handcrafted French pastries to New York City. From its humble beginnings as a home-based cottage bakery, L’Appartement 4F has grown into a beloved establishment, with a reputation built almost entirely on the quality of its croissants. Walking past the storefront, the inviting aroma of butter, sugar, and flaky pastry is enough to draw anyone in. It's a place that has garnered a loyal following through word-of-mouth and a viral social media presence, with people lining up for a chance to try their famous creations. For many, a visit to L’Appartement 4F is not just about grabbing a bite to eat; it's about indulging in a moment of pure, French-inspired pleasure in the heart of the city.
The origin story of L’Appartement 4F is a heartwarming tale of passion and perseverance. Founded by husband and wife duo Gautier and Ashley Coiffard, the bakery began in their Brooklyn apartment, unit 4F, during the early days of the pandemic. Gautier, a French native and self-taught baker, missed the high-quality, slow-fermented bread from his homeland and started baking his own. Ashley, a former school nurse, saw the potential and convinced him to start selling to friends and family. What began as a small-scale, home-based operation quickly gained a cult following on Instagram and TikTok, with their mini croissant cereal becoming a viral sensation. This success allowed them to open their first brick-and-mortar location in Brooklyn Heights, and more recently, their second location in the West Village. The name L’Appartement 4F serves as a charming reminder of their roots and the passion project that blossomed from their small home kitchen. Despite their rapid growth, the founders remain committed to their original ethos of hand-rolling each croissant and using high-quality ingredients, ensuring that the integrity of their pastries remains intact. This dedication to craft and authenticity is what truly sets them apart.
The West Village location of L’Appartement 4F is perfectly situated at 119 W 10th St, New York, NY 10011. This prime spot places the bakery in one of New York's most charming and historic neighborhoods, known for its beautiful brownstones, boutique shops, and vibrant street life. The area is a magnet for both residents and tourists, making it an ideal setting for a popular bakery. Getting there is relatively easy thanks to the city's extensive subway system. The 1, 2, and 3 lines at the Christopher St-Sheridan Sq station are a short walk away, as are the A, B, C, D, E, F, and M lines at the West 4th Street-Washington Square station. This accessibility means that whether you're coming from uptown, downtown, or a different borough, L'Appartement 4F is a convenient destination. However, as noted by a customer review, the shop operates strictly as a takeout window. This means there is no indoor seating, which is something to consider, especially on a day with bad weather. The setup, however, creates an efficient system for getting your pastries quickly and continuing your stroll through the picturesque West Village streets.
L’Appartement 4F specializes in a curated selection of French baked goods and beverages, focusing on quality over quantity. While the menu may not be vast, every item is crafted with meticulous care.
- Freshly Baked Croissants: The bakery's main attraction, their croissants are hand-rolled and baked fresh daily. They offer a variety of flavors, including the popular raspberry croissant, chocolate almond croissant, and plain croissants. Their commitment to the traditional French technique results in a perfectly flaky, buttery, and delicious pastry.
- Specialty Pastries: In addition to croissants, the bakery also offers other French pastries, such as kouign-amann and financiers, providing customers with a taste of a traditional French patisserie.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Must try bakery in the West Village, known for their croissants. Try the raspberry.Arrived just before 11am on a Saturday and they had most items available. Recommend getting there before Noon as items start to sell out.Raspberry had an intense raspberry flavor with a hint of sourness. I loved the flavor. But it was a little sweet and could do without the marzipan which complements but a little restraint would make it better.Chocolate almond croissant was a close second but also too sweet. Would have preferred chunks of chocolate with more intense chocolate flavor instead of the cream with the marzipan.Order comes in a bag unless you request a box. It was fine but items could get smashed if you aren’t careful. I had it with a Cappuccino👍Overall, it’s a great operation and a must try for the area. I hope they iterate on less sweet options.
April 26 · Adam FateI visited on a weekday afternoon after seeing this place recommended on social media as one of the best croissant spots in the city. I wanted to try both the raspberry almond and pistachio croissants, but when I arrived just after 1pm, the raspberry was already sold out. I ended up getting a pistachio croissant and a cold brew. The shop is strictly takeout, so you order from the window outside. The weather was nice, so I could enjoy my food outdoors, but I imagine it might be tough on a bad weather or cold day. The pistachio croissant was pretty tasty—slightly soft in the center, but still flavorful. It was a bit small for $8, but it made me even more curious to come back and try the raspberry one next time!
June 01 · Selina LI’ve been on a mission across the States & Canada to find the best almond croissant and this place absolutely takes the cake. Hands down one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. The flavors were incredible, but what really stood out was the texture and freshness, truly a 10/10!!!!
June 24 · James GreenTruly one of best bakeries here in the city!We arrived at this famous bakery early morning w no wait. We got croissants, cinnamon rolls, cookie, pistachios croissants, and a sourdough loaf. All were incredibly delicious w the exception of the cookie being more of a sugary cookie/bakery style rather than a thicker fluffier kind. All were delicious and def need to come back and try out their coffee bar!
