First time here. Ordered the pizza focaccia and the rosemary garlic focaccia. You can taste the aroma of the tomato sauce and the light texture of the bread. The sauce didn't make the bread soggy as I was thinking it would. The garlic/rosemary was my favorite of the two. For you garlic and rosemary lover, this is the one you must try. Fresh garlic taste with the awesome smell of the rosemary. This would go great with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. You need to go early before they get sold-out. I will be back for other selections. - Carey Yip

Liguria Bakery Introduce

Liguria Bakery is more than just a bakery; it is a true San Francisco institution and a cornerstone of the historic North Beach neighborhood's rich Italian-American heritage. For over a century, this family-owned and operated establishment has stood at the same corner, dedicating itself almost exclusively to perfecting one product: authentic Italian focaccia. This flatbread, made from a secret family recipe brought over from the Liguria region of Italy, has garnered a legendary reputation across the entire Bay Area and beyond. For California residents seeking a taste of authentic, old-world baking tradition, Liguria Bakery offers an unparalleled experience. Its no-frills, quality-first approach to business and baking has kept generations of customers loyal, making a visit here a nostalgic journey back to a simpler time.

What began in 1911 as a full-service bakery founded by Italian immigrant Ambrosio Soracco and his brothers, eventually specialized in focaccia around the 1950s in the face of growing competition from larger commercial bread companies. This specialization proved to be the key to their enduring success. Today, the third and fourth generations of the Soracco family continue to use the original brick oven from 1911 and an antique stainless-steel mixer, ensuring every sheet of focaccia is imbued with the history and tradition of the Italian-American cultural enclave of North Beach. It is recognized by the City and County of San Francisco as a Legacy Business, a testament to its significant cultural contribution and historical value to the city. Patrons often describe the experience of buying their focaccia—wrapped simply in white parchment paper and tied with string—as a beloved San Francisco ritual.

Location and Accessibility

The location of Liguria Bakery perfectly captures the essence of its history. Situated in the heart of the iconic North Beach district, the bakery is positioned directly across from Washington Square Park, a lively hub in the community. This corner location—1700 Stockton Street—is easily recognizable and a natural starting point for anyone exploring the area's culinary and historical landmarks.

For those traveling by vehicle, be aware that parking in this historic and bustling neighborhood can be a challenge. The bakery lists free street parking and paid street parking options nearby, but as with all dense San Francisco neighborhoods, it is highly recommended to plan for extra time to secure a spot. For accessibility, the premises offer a Wheelchair Accessible Entrance, demonstrating a commitment to serving all members of the community. Its prime spot on a major North Beach corner means it is also highly accessible via local public transportation, making it a convenient stop for locals throughout the Bay Area.

The proximity to Washington Square Park also adds a unique element to the experience. Since Liguria Bakery is strictly a takeout operation and does not offer seating, many patrons take their warm, freshly-wrapped focaccia sheets directly across the street to enjoy a quintessential San Francisco picnic lunch while enjoying the park's atmosphere. This tradition underscores the bakery's deep connection to its immediate neighborhood.
