Lung Fung Bakery Introduce
For Californians in the San Francisco Bay Area seeking a truly authentic, no-frills Chinese bakery experience, look no further than Lung Fung Bakery in the heart of the Richmond District. This establishment is a cherished local gem, known not for modern decor or extensive seating, but for perfecting traditional Cantonese baked goods—particularly the iconic savory and sweet buns—with a quality that keeps loyal customers, and even those from outside the Bay Area, coming back by the dozen.
Lung Fung Bakery embodies the spirit of an old-school Chinese bakery. It's an unassuming spot where the focus is entirely on the craft and the flavor. The atmosphere is bustling and efficient, with a constant stream of customers eager to snatch up goods that are often still warm from the oven. The bakery has been a staple in the community for decades, offering a nostalgic and genuine taste reminiscent of traditional Hong Kong-style bakeries. This commitment to tradition, quality ingredients, and generous portions has cemented its reputation as one of the best sources for baked char siu bao (BBQ Pork Buns) and dan tat (Egg Tarts) in all of San Francisco. It is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the culinary depth of the Richmond’s rich Asian food culture.
Lung Fung Bakery is conveniently located on the busy and vibrant Clement Street in San Francisco’s Richmond District, making it easily accessible for locals and those traveling to the area for a taste of authentic Cantonese baking.
The exact address is: 1823 Clement St #1825, San Francisco, CA 94121, USA.
Clement Street is a hub of activity in the Richmond, often featuring a diverse array of shops and eateries. For visitors, transportation planning should take a few key features into account. Parking in the area is limited to paid street parking, so drivers should be prepared. While the bakery itself is focused on quick takeout service and does not offer indoor seating, it ensures accessibility for all by providing a wheelchair accessible entrance. This efficiency and focus on grab-and-go is part of the fast-paced, high-volume appeal that allows them to serve so many fresh items throughout the day.
Lung Fung Bakery operates primarily as a traditional counter-service bakery, offering a streamlined experience focused on delivering fresh, high-quality baked goods quickly.
- Takeout-Only Service: The primary service is takeout. Customers queue up, select their desired buns, tarts, and cakes from the display cases, and their orders are boxed for consumption elsewhere. This style is ideal for a quick visit or stocking up on baked goods for the home.
- Pre-Ordering (for large volumes): While not a formal online service, public data suggests the bakery accommodates extremely large orders (such as those for several dozen buns) if customers call ahead and pre-order, though availability should be confirmed via phone.
- Affordable Breakfast Offerings: The bakery’s menu is perfect for a quick and affordable breakfast or mid-day snack, featuring buns and savory pastries that are both substantial and easy to eat on the go.
- Coffee and Tea: Though simple, the bakery offers Coffee and Tea to complement the pastries, allowing customers to easily pair a fresh bun with a classic hot beverage.
- Cash-Only Transactions: It is crucial for customers to note that Lung Fung Bakery is a Cash-Only establishment. Being prepared with cash will ensure a smooth and quick transaction.
- Specialty Cake Orders: Information suggests that the bakery, in an old-school fashion, also prepares larger items such as Wedding and Birthday Cakes, which would require direct inquiry.
Lung Fung Bakery stands out in the crowded San Francisco bakery scene due to its dedication to a few signature, exceptionally crafted items:
- The Baked BBQ Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao): Consistently lauded as among the best in the city, Lung Fung’s baked char siu bao is a phenomenon. It features a bun that is soft, slightly sweet, and often comes out of the oven warm with an alluring caramel-brown, crispy top crust. The filling is famous for being generous, saucy, and made with quality char siu (BBQ pork) that is chopped into sizable pieces without odd bits of fat or gristle.
- Flaky Egg Tarts (Dan Tat): A neighborhood favorite, the egg tarts are praised for their incredibly flaky, buttery crust (made using traditional methods, potentially including lard for superior texture) and a smooth, egg-forward custard that achieves the perfect level of sweetness. Catching them fresh out of the oven is a memorable experience.
- The “Pineapple” Buns (Bo Lo Bao) & Variations: The bakery offers several versions of the classic Bo Lo Bao, including the plain Pineapple Bun (named for its appearance, not the fruit), and variations like Pineapple W/ Custard Bun, Pineapple W/ Red Bean Bun, and the savory Pineapple W/ Cha Siu, all featuring the recognizable sweet, crumbly topping.
- Diverse Savory Buns and Pies: The menu extends well beyond sweet items, offering highly regarded savory choices such as the fragrant Green Onion Bun, Ham & Corn bun, Ham & Egg Bun, and hearty Chicken Pie and Curry Pie options, providing excellent meal alternatives.
- Nostalgic, Old-School Vibe: The bakery maintains a traditional, unpretentious, "no frills" ambiance, appealing to those who appreciate a legacy business that prioritizes authentic Cantonese flavor over modern trends.

A visit to Lung Fung Bakery is a chance to taste some of the most acclaimed Cantonese baked goods in the Bay Area. To maximize the experience, there are two mandatory items every local must try.
The absolute top choice is the Baked BBQ Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao). This is the item that locals line up for, sometimes buying dozens at a time. Customers describe it as a generous, meaty filling that is perfectly sweet and savory, wrapped in a soft, chewy, and distinctly sweet bread with a beautiful, slightly crispy top. When you get one that is still warm, the combination of the hot, saucy pork and the fresh-baked bun is truly unparalleled. It is highly recommended to get to the bakery as close to opening time as possible to secure these, as they are the fastest item to sell out.
The second essential selection is the Egg Custard Tart (Dan Tat). Lung Fung’s version is celebrated for its traditional preparation, boasting a crust that is lauded for its supreme flakiness and buttery crunch, contrasted perfectly with the smooth, silken, and lightly sweet egg custard. These tarts are a benchmark for Chinese bakeries in the city, offering a pure, refined taste of a Cantonese classic.
Finally, be sure to grab a few savory options for a light lunch or future snack. The Green Onion Bun or the classic Ham & Corn Bun come highly recommended as excellent Plan B items if the char siu bao is sold out, and they offer a delicious combination of salty and soft textures. Remember to bring cash to enjoy the quick and affordable delights of this Richmond treasure!

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A truly wheat flour, Chinese bakery (no BS) doing one thing well — baked buns with alluringly caramel-brown crusts. A 3-man team can be seen preparing the dough in the back during morning hours. Baked BBQ Pork Buns, excellent.
May 31 · Christopher ChungI bought a mini day pass and took the opportunity to ride around town today with my mom. We came out to Dinner Richmond specifically to grab some pork buns. There was a line when we arrived and another when we left, so this place is popular. The person in front of me actually came from Sacramento to stock up. She got 6 dozen buns in total, including roast pork, pineapple custard and green onion. She said she preordered the day before since she was getting so many. So, I had high expectations. I ordered 10 pineapple and roast pork buns and asked for 1 to be set aside so Mom and I could sample it in the store. It was delicious. Unfortunately, they were out of the other buns or else I may have gotten some more. Next time....Note, price per bun varies and it's cash only.
July 06 · Linda H.This reminds me of the baked manapua shop in Hawaii where I accompanied my mom to pick up large food orders. The store appears to be a legacy business with loyal customers. We had previously eaten dim sum nearby but saved some space in our bellies for the baked char siu bao and our favorite dan tat. Both did not disappoint. Served up warm. The filling of the char siu bao was delicious (savory and sweet and no red food coloring). The egg start crust had the perfect crunch and flake. Oh, so good. Definitely will be back!
August 09 · Nina VThis review only pertains to the char siu baos. I’ve searched high and low and tried over two dozen bakery’s char siu baos across the entire city of SF from Chinatown to Mission, to Ocean Avenue to the Richmond and Sunset districts, and Lung Fung is my favorite, by a long shot. What makes this my favorite BBQ Pork bun in the City? The filling is generous, the BBQ pork is chopped in .5cm pieces, no odd bits of gristle or fat, the bun is chewy, yet soft and sweet, and there are no dead spots, where you take a bite and it’s all bread and no filling.FYI - Curry beef Puff pastry is baked much later in the morning.Cash Only.
March 22 · Barry Louie10-26-21:Got a few custard tarts and BBQ pork buns to go.The custard tarts were very tasty. Lots of filling and flaky crust! The pork buns were good with a generous amount of filling. I found something a little different in the dough. Maybe some coconut flavor?!? Couldn't pinpoint the exact ingredient. Not sure if I liked the coconut.
