Introduction / Overview
In the vibrant, creative pulse of New York City's Lower East Side, Michaeli Bakery stands as a testament to the power of quality and genuine hospitality. Tucked away on Division Street, this small but mighty bakery has rapidly become a local favorite, celebrated for its exceptional baked goods that blend Israeli tradition with classic pastry techniques. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is one of warmth and welcome, a stark contrast to its unassuming size. Michaeli Bakery is not just a place to grab a quick treat; it's a destination for true pastry lovers who appreciate the art and craft behind every single item. The owner, Adir Michaeli, a talented Israeli pastry chef, brings a unique perspective to the New York bakery scene, having honed his skills in Tel Aviv and at the renowned Breads Bakery. This rich background is evident in the bakery's diverse menu, which features everything from buttery, flaky croissants to authentic Jewish classics like babka and rugelach. The quality is consistently praised by customers who describe the croissants as "the BEST" and the babkas as "decadent." What truly elevates the experience, however, is the human element. The friendly and kind staff, known for their bright smiles and welcoming energy, make every visit feel like you’re a part of the neighborhood family. This blend of phenomenal food and outstanding service is what has cemented Michaeli Bakery's status as a beloved gem in the Lower East Side, a place that proves that good things truly do come in small packages.
Michaeli Bakery's reputation is built on a foundation of quality ingredients and masterful technique. The croissants, a particular highlight, are a perfect example of this dedication. Customers rave about their flaky layers and rich, buttery flavor, a result of a meticulous "old school French process." This attention to detail extends to their entire menu. The babka, for instance, is described as "chocolate-y, gooey and decadent," and the burekas—savory filled pockets of puff pastry—are a must-try for their phenomenal flavor and texture. The bakery’s unique offerings also include items that pay homage to different culinary traditions, such as Latin American alfajores cookies and classic European kugelhopf, all with a distinct Michaeli twist that makes them less sweet and more balanced. This multinational array of baked goods provides an exciting culinary adventure for every customer. Despite its popularity and the high demand for its products, the bakery maintains a neighborhood feel, where you can often chat with the staff and feel a genuine connection to the people making your food. This combination of world-class pastries and a friendly, intimate atmosphere is what makes Michaeli Bakery a truly special place and a vital part of the Lower East Side's vibrant food scene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The BEST croissant I’ve ever had. Outstanding service in the cutest bakery. The lady working there had the kindest smile and best energy- adding to the already wonderful experience. Our croissant was flaky, SUPER buttery and beautifully crafted. Highly recommend!
July 13 · Antonia N.A Small Bakery with a Huge Surprise!Michaeli Bakery may be small, but it packs a big surprise! Their croissants are absolutely amazing. perfectly layered and full of rich, buttery flavor. I truly enjoyed every single layer. A must-try for any pastry lover! The staff was very friendly and she made us so happy with her smile
May 17 · RieAgain, on the hunt for the best chocolate chip cookie brought me to Michaeli. I must have seen it somewhere on social media, but I'm glad I came for the cookie because that spinach burek was EVERYTHING. Really tasty. I think some would think it was small, but I thought it was the perfect size. Crispy, flaky, savory...really so tasty. The cookie (why I came in the first place was also good. Thick and with a good chew. I bet if I could wait and warm it up, it would have been even better. I love a big cookie that is chewy without being underdone. I t has nuts FYI. While not my favorite cookie, pretty solid. There is a small amount if seating and a really efficient and friendly person behind the counter. I would come back and get about 4 bureks in different flavors.
March 21 · Lisa WilliamsIt's a cute bakery with simple decor. The prices are average and some things a little pricey. However the Almond Chocolate Croissant was the best I've ever had. I still have to try the Spinach Borekas I brought home. The service is very good.
December 03 · Vivianne BarrettoYou know a bakery is good when you arrive at 4:00 p.m. and they have very little left. This small, out of the way bakery was definitely worth the trip. You can tell everything is handcrafted with love and care. David was my server, and he was charming and engaging and delightful. I got the apple croissant, a potato filled pastry, and the chocolate rugulach. All were exceptional. I will be visiting them again!
