Muddy Fork Bakery Introduce
For Indiana residents who appreciate the art of true artisan baking, Muddy Fork Bakery in Bloomington is far more than a simple local shop—it is a destination. This bakery has rightfully earned its reputation as a singular culinary institution in Central Indiana, largely thanks to its dedication to ancient traditions, exceptional ingredients, and a truly unique baking method.
Muddy Fork Bakery is home to Indiana's only wood-fired, solar-powered brick oven. This commitment to traditional methods, where the bread is baked directly on the brick hearth, coaxes out a level of flavor, crust quality, and keeping ability that is simply unmatched. The bakery is renowned for specializing in naturally-leavened, or sourdough, bread, a process requiring patience, time, and a deep understanding of the wild leavening culture.
Beyond the impressive oven, their commitment to quality begins at the source: they use exclusively organic, stone-milled grains, mostly sourced from Janie's Farm in Illinois, with much of it milled in-house fresh for each bake on their dedicated stone mill. This attention to detail is evident in every bite, from the crackling crust of a rustic sourdough to the pure joy found in their world-class pastries. Customers rave about the authenticity and superior quality, noting, "I don’t think I’ve had this flaky of a croissant even with all of my travels to Europe!" Muddy Fork Bakery is a genuine Hoosier gem that elevates simple baked goods into a profound culinary experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I mean WOW! I don’t think I’ve had this flaky of a croissant even with all of my travels to Europe! It was honestly a culinary experience to bite into the ham and cheese croissant. The crunch, the flavor, the pure joy! I wish I had found this bakery sooner and treated myself to the delights that are this bakery! Luckily I still have a rhubarb croissant saved for later, can’t wait to try more flavors as summer progresses!
May 14 · Amanda MCroissant baking workshop was fantastic. (Gift Certificates available.) Learned a lot and had a great day. Thank you for squeezing us in. All the best to you at the Muddy Fork Bakery. A great service in Bloomington.
April 14 · Patrick SineyOk Wow! This Morning I had a chocolate croissant at the Bloomington Farm Stop Collective and it was just Outstanding. The flakiness and chocolate chunks made this superior to any other one I have tasted in the states.
April 11 · Wendy Wilkinsonseriously the best croissants and bread. my family and i order from here pretty often now, and i always get the almond croissant, it’s incredible!!
April 01 · EllaI’ve heard of Muddy Fork Bakery as the best bakery in Bloomington but never had the chance to taste it until last weekend!I preordered it on their website and picked up at Switchyard park on Saturday during the open hours of Farmers Market. It was super convenient and I appreciate they also have options to donate to send breads to people in needs on the menu. You can also purchase the bread directly at the farmers market, but you get to do it early cause it runs out fast!We had the croissant loaf and heat it in the oven. It was beyond delicious already without adding any paste! The moisture was perfect. We’ll definitely order more and maybe try the others! Thank you for making our day!Check out their Instagram if you haven’t!(Thought they also have a baking experience class and I might want to give it a try!)
