Nate's Bagels Introduce
A True Richmond Original: The Story of Nate's Bagels
For residents of the greater Richmond, Virginia (RVA) area, finding an authentic, high-quality bagel has been a long-standing quest. Fortunately, since its brick-and-mortar opening in the spring of 2018, Nate's Bagels has stepped up to fill that void, quickly becoming a celebrated local hotspot. Located in the vibrant Fan District, Nate's Bagels is more than just a breakfast restaurant; it’s a commitment to a craft. The shop specializes in kettle-boiled, stone-baked bagels that many locals and even New York/New Jersey transplants hail as some of the best they’ve ever had.
The journey to create the perfect "Richmond bagel" began with its founder, Nate, a former civil engineer who spent two meticulous years developing his recipe. Drawing inspiration from farmer's markets, local ingredients, and even making trips to consult with established bagel masters in New York and New Jersey, the resulting bagel offers a fantastic balance of a chewy, substantial crust and a soft, flavorful interior. The mission is simple: to perfect the classics while creating new, inventive flavors that reflect the complex spirit of the city. While the shop is renowned for its bustling atmosphere—especially on weekend mornings—the staff is consistently praised for keeping the service fast and efficient, making it an essential destination for a quick, satisfying breakfast or lunch.
Location and Accessibility in the Fan District
Nate's Bagels is situated right in the heart of one of Richmond's most beloved neighborhoods. Its address is a well-known corner spot, making it highly visible and a convenient stop for those in the city.
Address: 21 S Allen Ave, Richmond, VA 23220, USA
The location offers a casual, welcoming, and slightly nostalgic deli atmosphere. However, as with many popular spots in a busy city neighborhood, accessibility requires some planning, particularly regarding parking.
Accessibility Details:
- The shop features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible restroom, demonstrating a commitment to serving all members of the Richmond community.
- Parking is limited to free street parking in the surrounding area. Since the Fan District is a busy residential and commercial neighborhood, patrons should anticipate that they may need to circle the block to find an open spot, especially during peak hours like Saturday and Sunday mornings.
- The shop is well-equipped for a modern, quick visit, offering multiple payment options including Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and NFC mobile payments.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Nate’s Bagels is clearly a hot spot in Richmond—and for good reason. We showed up on a weekday morning, and the line was nearly out the door. The place was very busy, with what looked like 50+ bag orders stacked on the counter, but the staff kept things moving smoothly and efficiently. Despite the crowd, we didn’t wait long at all for our food, which was a pleasant surprise given how popular the place is.We ordered the Lox bagel, and it did not disappoint. It was generously loaded with lox, and every bite was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. While the bagel doesn’t come warm (something to keep in mind), the quality of the ingredients made up for it. It felt like a great value and exactly what you’d hope for from a bagel shop with this kind of reputation. We also tried “The Virginny,” which turned out to be the sleeper hit of the visit. It came with egg, sausage, and tomato jam—and wow. The tomato jam added a sweet but savory twist that tied everything together perfectly. It was unique, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious. One thing to note: parking is tough. There’s no lot—just street parking in a busy area, so plan ahead or be ready to circle the block a bit.Overall, Nate’s Bagels lives up to the hype. Great food, fast service despite the crowds, and a creative menu that makes it worth the wait. Highly recommend if you’re in the area!
June 20 · Brent DuvallI got upcharged at $9.25 for a $7.75 bagel that I ordered. The cashier informed me that they would issue a charge back but I am still charged the full amount. As seen in the pics, I asked for a build your own bagel for an everything bagel ($1.5) with double egg ($4), cheddar cheese ($1.5), tomato ($0.50) and herb aioli ($0.25), subtotaling $7.75.Instead, my order was charged as the base of simple breakfast ($6.25), with the rest of the ingredients/substitutions as surcharges, totaling $9.25.After explaining the difference to the cashier, they agreed and said they would charge back, but I am still charged the full amount. As far as the food itself goes, the $4 double egg was incredibly thin, and the bagel was dense and chewy and didn't hold together well at all. The coffee was pretty good.
August 20 · Omer ManganThe bagel wasnt bad, more dense than I typically like but not bad. The weird thing is the coffee is self serve, but then has a sign that states "no refills". For $3+ and you get it yourself but then a tip is expected and you can't get refills? I didn't stay long enough to want a refill but it just shows the place is penny pinching and gives an odd vibe.
July 17 · LocalReally enjoyed this place. The bagels were really good and they weren’t as slow as some others mentioned! If you are wanting a bagel I’d highly recommend.
May 24 · Philip CorwinNew Yorker here—and I’m not impressed. First off, I’ve never been to a bagel shop that doesn’t toast bagels. Like… “?????” What do you mean you don’t toast? It’s not morning, rather 2 in the afternoon. So yes I would love it cold, yum 😒 Oh wait, never mind, they do toast the pizza bagels, but nothing else. Hmm okay. Also, I’m a lover of lox cream cheese and buy it any chance I get , and let me tell you, I had to go on a spiritual journey just to locate the smoked salmon in this so-called lox cream cheese. Granted, it was labeled “lox and dill,” but it was more like “dill with a side of disappointment.” Heavy on the dill, light on the actual seafood protein situation. My standard for lox cream cheese is that it should be so riddled with salmon goodness that it takes on a lovely pink hue. This? This was just… white sadness with dill freckles. So yeah, after spending $7.50 on a tub of what should just be renamed “herb cream cheese,” I walked out completely disappointed. Is it a good bagel? Well, yeah.Is it comparable to Einstein Bros or Panera? Definitely. Will I go back? Lol—let’s not be ridiculous.
