Ocean Malasada Company Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Ocean Malasada Company – Bringing Island Sweetness to the Bay
For Californians seeking a taste of the tropics and a unique departure from the standard donut, Ocean Malasada Company offers an irresistible destination. Located in the heart of San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building Marketplace, this bakery specializes in malasadas—a traditional Portuguese fried dough treat that found a second, vibrant home in Hawaii. Owner Randy Santos, drawing inspiration from his Filipino and Hawaiian cultural heritage, has elevated this classic dessert, infusing it with vibrant, contemporary island flavors that resonate deeply with the Bay Area's diverse and sophisticated palate.
A malasada, often described as a “Portuguese donut without a hole,” is a ball of yeast-leavened, eggy dough that is deep-fried until golden, fluffy, and perfectly crisp on the outside, and then traditionally tossed in sugar and cinnamon. Ocean Malasada Company takes this foundational perfection and enhances it with fillings that pay homage to the rich culinary traditions of Hawaii and the Philippines. This artisanal approach is what sets Ocean Malasada apart. Every malasada is handcrafted and made fresh every morning, ensuring a warm, golden, and truly exceptional experience for every customer.
The core philosophy of Ocean Malasada Company is to serve up "sweet island moments with every bite," whether you are a first-time visitor curious about this Hawaiian-Filipino twist on fried dough or a long-time regular craving a taste of home. Their commitment is evident in the popular flavors—including the distinctive Ube Halaya and zesty Lilikoi—that transform a simple fried pastry into a rich, culturally significant dessert. While some may compare the traditional version to a generic donut, the unique, fluffy texture of the dough, combined with the innovative, creamy, and flavorful fillings, solidifies Ocean Malasada Company as a must-visit bakery in the San Francisco food scene.

Features / Highlights
Ocean Malasada Company’s unique identity in the San Francisco bakery landscape is defined by its fusion of tradition and flavor innovation.
- Cultural Fusion Desserts: The malasadas are a deliberate blend of Portuguese tradition (the dough), Hawaiian influence (the island fruit flavors), and Filipino heritage (flavors like Ube Halaya), creating a dessert experience unique to the Bay Area.
- Ube Halaya Flavor: The inclusion of Ube Halaya (purple yam) filling is a major highlight, representing a deep connection to Filipino cuisine and catering to a sophisticated, diverse local market that seeks authentic and trending ethnic flavors.
- Unique, Creamy Fillings: Unlike simple jams or custards, the fillings—such as the Mango and Nutella options—are described by customers as having a "fluffy cheesecake" texture, providing a richer, lighter, and more complex experience than a straight-up filling.

What is Worth Choosing: The Ultimate Tropical Treat
To truly appreciate the artistry of Ocean Malasada Company, customers are advised to move beyond the traditional plain option and explore the specialty filled malasadas that highlight the bakery’s unique cultural inspiration and commitment to flavor.
The Ube Halaya malasada is arguably the most culturally significant and unique choice. Ube, or purple yam, is a staple in Filipino desserts, known for its sweet, earthy, and slightly nutty flavor. Encased in a warm, fluffy malasada, the Ube Halaya offers an authentic and memorable taste that is distinctively Ocean Malasada.
For those who crave bright, tangy, and refreshing flavors, the Lilikoi (Passion Fruit) malasada is a top-tier option. Lilikoi is synonymous with Hawaiian flavor, and the filling delivers a zesty punch that beautifully cuts through the richness of the fried dough.
The Mango and Guava malasadas are excellent tropical options that consistently receive rave reviews. The mango filling, noted by a customer as having a "fluffy cheesecake" flavor, is a must-try for its unique texture and intensely fruity sweetness. Similarly, the Nutella option is praised for being a "fluffy deliciousness" rather than a straight, dense spread, making it a lighter, more elevated version of a chocolate-hazelnut favorite.
For the best tasting experience, choosing the 4 - Pack is highly recommended. This allows patrons to sample the range of craftsmanship—combining the traditional dough’s warmth and fluffiness with a rotation of the unique fillings like Ube, Mango, Lilikoi, and Haupia (Coconut Pudding). The experience of enjoying these warm, island-inspired treats while taking in the sights and sounds of the San Francisco Ferry Building is a genuine Californian culinary delight.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Holy cow we got two of these today and 😮💨😮💨😮💨 AMAZING!!! And definitely unique from the ones I’ve had in Hawaii and the Bay Area. They were sold out of lilikoi so I got mango… the filling is like a fluffy cheesecake mango flavor. So good and not overly sweet. My dining partner got Nutella and it wasn’t straight up Nutella it was fluffy deliciousness. We will be back!!
May 18 · Erika RobyI was so excited to try but sadly there was nothing special (I got traditional flavor). It’s donut you can get from mom-and-pop shops for $2 but you pay more than double
August 14 · Jiwon HDelicious! The perfect level of sweetness and guava filling - will be back.
September 25 · Laura PierceDelicious and great service! I had the guava malasada and the ratio of the filling and the dough was perfect
June 14 · Lauren MoranMy family and I were so excited to taste their haupia, even though they were pricey. It was sour!! They may have been either old or they mixed the coconut with sour cream. If it was old, they should've never served it and threw it away. VERY Disappointed
