Ole & Steen Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a taste of something new and deliciously different, Ole & Steen has become a go-to destination. This Danish bakery and cafe has introduced a delightful slice of Copenhagen's culinary scene to the heart of the city, offering a range of beautifully crafted pastries, artisanal breads, and savory items that are both familiar and uniquely Scandinavian. Unlike traditional American bakeries, Ole & Steen presents a menu that is both innovative and rooted in authentic baking traditions. The experience is more than just grabbing a quick bite; it's an opportunity to relax in a welcoming space and enjoy high-quality baked goods made with care and expertise. This article will provide a detailed look at what makes Ole & Steen a must-visit spot for locals, from its central location to its diverse menu and charming atmosphere.
The reputation of Ole & Steen is built on the quality of its products and the unique flavors they offer. The Danish influence is clear in every item, from the light and airy pastries to the dense, flavorful rye breads. One customer review praised a croissant as "delicious," highlighting the bakery's mastery of classic baking techniques. Another review sheds light on a more unique offering, describing the cinnamon swirl as having "airy texture like a croissant with the fixings of a cinnamon roll," a perfect example of the innovative yet traditional items that define the menu. The cafe's atmosphere is also a key part of the experience, with a "cute cafe with a busy upstairs and a very quiet downstairs seating area" offering spaces for both those who want to work and those who want to relax. While one customer noted a lack of accessibility for the downstairs seating, the overall consensus is that the food and atmosphere provide a high-quality experience. The iced matcha latte was even singled out as "delicious," proving that their beverage menu is as carefully curated as their baked goods.
The Ole & Steen location we're focusing on is at 873 Broadway, New York, NY 10003, USA. This places it right in the heart of Union Square, one of Manhattan's most vibrant and well-connected neighborhoods. This central location makes it incredibly accessible for a wide range of New Yorkers. For those using public transit, the bakery is just a few steps away from the Union Square subway station, which serves the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains. This transit hub makes it easy to get to Ole & Steen from nearly any part of Manhattan, as well as Brooklyn and Queens. Its placement on Broadway also means it’s a popular spot for people working in nearby offices, students from local universities, and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods.
The accessibility of this location is a major plus. The presence of both an upstairs and downstairs seating area, though with some noted accessibility issues, provides options for those who want to stay a while. The busy nature of the area means that the bakery is well-suited for catering to a fast-paced, urban crowd. It's a perfect meeting spot for friends, a quiet corner for a coffee and a book, or a place to grab a quick and delicious pastry on your way to work.

June 19 · MarshaCute cafe with a busy upstairs and a very quiet downstairs seating area. Downstairs seating does not seem to be accessible, I had some trouble getting down with my cane and food.Food was good, although my pastry had very little filling. My coffee was mediocre, no better than any generic coffee chain, but the iced matcha latte was delicious.
July 12 · Val (Cool Dude)Tried this place in London (Richmond area) and was delighted to find an outpost right off here at Union Square. All the transatlantic, densely dainty carb concoctions one dearly loves are here as meal, snack, or splurge. I cannot recommend higher the chocolate bun, cinnamon swirl, or chocolate swirl, but there’s all kinds of other buns and breads to try too. New York is full of treats, but if you’re treat-inclined you have to rotate Ole & Steen into your menu of routine indulgence.
March 04 · Justin Rogers-CooperOne of the best coffee shops in Manhattan. Delicious baked goods and fantastic coffee. The space is huge with plenty of seating. Absolutely recommended for a daily coffee fix !
March 09 · Ash N. PatelWas looking for some coffee and breakfast around Union Square and was lucky to find this lovely place. It's interior design is minimalistic yet comfortable. I thoroughly enjoyed my egg and cheese breakfast roll. The egg and cheese coupled with bread that's cruchy on the outside and soft on the inside was so delicious I was tempted to buy another one!
