Oma Gisi's German Bakery Introduce
For Illinois residents with a craving for true European craftsmanship, Oma Gisi's German Bakery in Kinmundy, Illinois, offers a delightful journey across the Atlantic without ever leaving the state. This cherished local establishment is dedicated to the art of traditional German baking, bringing authentic recipes and Old-World flavor to the Southern Illinois community. Unlike typical bakeries, Oma Gisi’s specializes in the kinds of classic pastries, specialty breads, and celebratory cakes found in the finest German Konditoreien (patisseries).
Founded by Gisela "Oma" Anna Ambron, who co-founded the bakery at the age of 68 after moving to Illinois from Germany, the business is a testament to the motto she lived by: "It's not that you can't, it's that you don't want to." This dedication to traditional methods and quality ingredients is what makes Oma Gisi's a distinctive and memorable stop. The bakery proudly identifies as a women-owned business, bringing a vibrant, experienced, and adventurous spirit to its culinary creations. Patrons often seek out their unique offerings, which range from flaky, fruit-filled pastries to dense, nutritious German loaves.
While known for offering treats for local pickup, Oma Gisi's has also cultivated a niche in shipping their traditional goods, allowing Illinois customers across the state—and indeed, customers across the country—to enjoy a genuine taste of Germany. From Bavarian pretzels to specialty cakes like the famous Frankfurter Kranz (Crown of Frankfurt cake), Oma Gisi's German Bakery is a true cultural and culinary gem in Kinmundy.

For customers in Illinois seeking an authentic German culinary experience, there are several items at Oma Gisi's German Bakery that exemplify its unique and highly specialized offerings.
For the Savory Palate: The absolute first choice should be the Bavarian Pretzel. This is not a soft, American-style pretzel; it is the authentic, lye-dipped German version, characterized by its deep brown, shiny exterior, coarse salt, and soft, chewy interior. It offers a truly European snack experience.
For the Dessert Connoisseur: The Raspberry Quark Basket is a must-try. Quark is a fresh, creamy German cheese that provides a unique texture and a tangy flavor profile distinct from standard cream cheese, perfectly balanced by fresh raspberries and a flaky pastry shell. This specialty item showcases the bakery’s commitment to using authentic ingredients and traditional German techniques.
For a Celebration: If you are planning a large gathering, ordering one of the large, traditional German cakes, such as the Frankfurter Kranz or the seasonal Pflaumenkuchen (Prune Plum Streusel Cake), is a worthwhile investment. These cakes are not only visually impressive but also offer a depth of flavor and texture that is characteristic of fine German baking. While customers should note that shipping can be complicated for delicate items, as indicated by previous reviews, the quality of the product itself for local pickup makes these cakes a spectacular choice for any important occasion in the Illinois region. The fact that this bakery is run by a woman who dedicated her later life to bringing a piece of her German heritage to Kinmundy further makes any purchase a choice that supports a deeply authentic local business.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I ordered the Frankfurter Kranz - Crown of Frankfurt cake on October 31, 2020. As on their website it stated that there would be a 2-week delay because of the COVID-19, which is understandable. I waited 2 weeks, no E-mails or status updates. I sent an E-mail asking about the status of when the cake would be shipped. The company responded fairly quickly and stated to me that the cake will be shipped out on Monday, November 16, 2020 or at the latest on Tuesday, November 17, 2020. So, Tuesday came and no shipment and the status of the cake still said unfulfilled. I sent another E-mail asking about the cake shipment and since it had not been shipped, I asked for a refund. About an hour later, about the time the business would have closed, I received an E-mail with a UPS tracking number only…no response to the E-mail I had sent about a refund because the status on their website still indicated the cake was unfulfilled. So, I checked their website after I had gotten the UPS tracking number and then it finally had said fulfilled. 3 days later, on Friday, November 20, 2020, almost 3 weeks since I had ordered the cake, it was delivered. The box that the cake was shipped in was damaged because it was a flimsy 12x10x8 box. I was worried that the cake was damaged and when I opened the box, there was a lot of Styrofoam peanuts on top of the cake box. The cake was wrapped in some flimsy, insulated wrapping and then wrapped in shrink wrap. The cherries were squashed on top into the cake. There was no dry ice shipped with the cake. Packaging was very bad for the cake. The opinion of my friend on the taste without having ever tasted this style of cake before: The nuts tasted burned and a little bitter when perhaps they should have tasted like they were toasted. There was no heavy flavoring, no real sweetness (does not know if it is suppose to taste that way).
February 23 · ask meI was so grateful to the hard work you put into ensuring the cake arrived for our daughter's birthday, even during a winter storm. It arrived exactly on time and was absolutely delicious.
March 09 · Charles WatkinsonI had placed an order decent size order over $100 from this bakery that I was told was pretty decent. I thought let me support a family/small owned business for the holidays instead of buying from a big box store. I even purchased a bit before the holiday cut off period. Ended up reaching out because it was now a month later and they had still not sent my order. They didn't even ask or offer to make it right. I sent an email and they didn't even reply. I just recieved a notification that it was canceled later on in the day.
January 09 · The Crafty WitchI ordered from them awhile back and they were late, but the cookies were yummy. I ordered 11/8/21 for my dad for Thanksgiving, thinking ordering so early it would get there…NOPE! I contacted the company and the owner responded stating it’ll be mailed Monday 11/21/21 and Wednesday it will be delivered. I received no shipping tracking. So when I contacted the company again on Tuesday and Wednesday requesting this, I got no response. 4 emails and one phone call and NO RESPONSE! The last email I basically stated I wanted my money back, and do not mail them as Thanksgiving is over! If I don’t hear from them I was going to report them to the BBB. This morning, I received my 100.00 refund. Horrible customer service. They didn’t try to make it right. I will never shop there, which is sad cause the product was good. If they would of told me they are behind and it would get there for Thanksgiving, I would of been ableTo get something else for my dad. Buyer beware….
November 26 · Stacey CaldwellThis was my first time ordering from Oma Gisi's German Bakery! The shipment was sent out on Tuesday 6/3 and we received it today (6/8) and everything was hard as stone. The Brötchen and bread were not edible and I’d have gladly paid more (shipping was free) for the items to arrive next day or at least within 2 business days. However, I was issued a refund, which I appreciated. ! The items looked good and I’m sure they’d have tasted good fresh but not shipped!
