Pearl's Bagels Introduce
Pearl's Bagels has quickly established itself as a beloved fixture in the Washington, D.C. culinary scene, offering a distinctive, quality-focused take on the classic bagel. Located in the bustling Mount Vernon Square/Shaw neighborhood, this women-owned business, helmed by the husband-and-wife team of Allee and Oliver Cox, was born out of a genuine craving for a superior bagel experience in the District. Rather than simply replicating the New York style, Pearl's Bagels has carved out its own niche by utilizing a sourdough starter—affectionately named Joe—which gives their bagels a unique, slightly tangy depth of flavor that sets them apart from the "run of the mill" varieties.
The core of the Pearl's experience is the dedication to traditional craftsmanship. Each bagel is hand-rolled and boiled in honey-infused water before being baked in a brick oven, resulting in a product that is chewy on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. This meticulous process, combined with a commitment to simple, high-quality ingredients (flour, water, salt, yeast, honey, and a touch of malt powder), has garnered them a dedicated local following.
Beyond the exceptional bagels themselves, Pearl's offers an imaginative menu of specialty sandwiches and house-made spreads that are highly regarded by D.C. residents. From gourmet breakfast options featuring cage-free eggs to innovative lunch sandwiches, the menu successfully balances traditional deli fare, like the Lox and Whitefish Salad, with modern, creative combinations. The atmosphere is frequently noted as being bright, cheerful, and welcoming, with a dog-friendly theme inspired by the shop's French Bulldog namesake, Pearl. For those in search of a quality, locally-sourced breakfast or lunch in the heart of D.C., Pearl's Bagels is a must-visit destination.
This establishment appeals not only to bagel aficionados but also to the health-conscious and those seeking quick, yet high-quality, dining options. With proximity to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Pearl's Bagels serves as an ideal spot for professionals, local residents, and visitors who appreciate a fresh, hand-made meal and a vibrant, community-focused environment.

What is Worth Choosing
To fully appreciate what makes Pearl's Bagels a standout in the District, customers should consider trying one of their celebrated signature items or focusing on the exceptional quality of their core products.
The Signature Bagel Experience: Start with an Everything Bagel or Sesame Bagel ($2.50 each) to appreciate the sourdough chew and crispy exterior. Pair it with the highly recommended Nana's Hot Jalapeno Cheese ($8.00 per half pint), a creamy, spicy, and savory spread that has achieved near-legendary status among regulars. This combination delivers the perfect balance of traditional texture and bold, unique flavor.
The Gourmet Breakfast: For a sophisticated start to the day, order The Frenchie ($11.25). This specialty sandwich features ham, eggs, gruyere cheese, and spicy mustard—a rich, savory, and complex take on the classic breakfast bagel that many customers rave about. For those seeking an innovative savory option, The Sunny Side ($11.25) is another popular choice.
The Classic with a Twist: The Classic Lox sandwich ($11.00) is a consistently strong seller, utilizing locally sourced lox from Ivy City Smokehouse. When paired with a plain bagel and the rich house-made cream cheese, it provides an elevated, high-quality version of the traditional New York classic. Those looking for an alternative seafood option should sample the Smoked Tuna Spread ($14.25 per half pint) or the Whitefish Salad ($13.50 per half pint).
Plant-Based Perfection: The Garden Party sandwich ($10.75) is the best choice for vegans and vegetarians. It includes Little Sesame Hummus and Impossible Sausage, showcasing Pearl’s ability to offer fulfilling and flavorful non-meat options.
The Beverage Pairing: Don't miss out on their robust coffee program. The Hot Coffee ($3.50) or Cold Brew ($5.25) is sourced from Small World Coffee in New Jersey, further adding to the shop's East Coast roots and guaranteeing a strong, quality complement to your bagel.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I tried Pearl’s Bagels on Too Good to Go. My favorites are the sesame seed and the everything bagel. They are slightly smaller than NYC bagels. The interior is bright and cheery. The staff is warm and friendly. It’s easy to see why Pearl’s is a popular spot.
September 18 · Augusto PaulinoI stumbled across Pearl’s Bagels recently while walking through the neighborhood, it caught my eye with its cute, welcoming storefront, so I decided to pop in and check it out.Inside, Pearl’s has a cozy, laid-back vibe. I arrived just as the lunch rush was picking up, so it was buzzing with people, but still felt inviting.I went with the lox bagel sandwich made with cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers; and grabbed some whitefish salad to go. The sandwich was filling, but the flavor didn’t wow me. That said, the whitefish salad was solid and the sesame bagel itself was great — fresh, chewy, and just the right amount of crisp on the outside. The menu rotates daily. On the day I visited, they had plain, poppy seed, everything, sesame, onion, and cinnamon raisin bagels available. They also offer a range of spreads and flavored cream cheeses.Bagels are reasonably priced @$2.50 each; 6 for $12; or a dozen for $24If you’re in the area, especially near the Washington Convention Center, Pearl’s is a fun, colorful spot for a quick bite, a solid bagel, and a good cup of coffee. There’s outdoor seating too, if the weather plays nice.
May 31 · Wendy M.Fantastic bagel shop located in DC. They had bunches of options to try and their bagels were delicious. The cheese pull on my bacon egg and cheese bagel was amazing. The staff was fantastic and they had a few places inside and out to dine. They sell all their products in the little fridge by the door and their drinks are pretty good too. If you like bagels, this is a good spot.
July 05 · Chris CHad heard really good things and it could have just been a bad day but neither of the bagels we tried were great. They were supposed to be toasted but were not and the taste itself was very mediocre for a bagel that costs $11. I tried the lox sandwich and the veggie lox sandwich and neither stood out. Will give this another chance at some point. The service and vibe were great.
June 04 · MonikaThis bagel shop is so cute!A bit crowded on the weekends, but the waiting time not too long.I tried the bee’s knees which is a very interesting combination of honey ham and cinnamon raisins bagel. Sweet and sour!
