Umami Kushi Introduce
Introduction / Overview
**Umami Kushi** is not just a bakery or a cafe; it is a vibrant culinary nexus located in the heart of Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood. This unique local small business has carved out a special niche in the Washington food scene by expertly fusing global flavors, with a primary focus on traditional Japanese street food and other savory and sweet pastries. The name itself, "Umami Kushi," translating roughly to savory skewer, hints at the establishment's origins as a yakitori catering company, a foundation of authentic Japanese technique that still influences their work today.
What truly sets Umami Kushi apart and makes it an essential visit for any Seattle local is its signature product: the **Okazu Pan**. This is a Japanese-style grab-and-go pastry—a baseball-sized fried bread roll with a savory filling—a favorite convenience store snack in Japan that owner Harold Fields has perfected for the Northwest palate. Fillings include fan favorites like **Beef Curry Pan** and **BBQ Pork Okazu Pan**, showcasing a unique intersection of global tastes, sometimes even incorporating Afro-Caribbean influences.
The establishment proudly identifies as both **Black-owned** and **Asian-owned**, reflecting the rich culinary background and innovative spirit of its owner. This dual identity fuels a dynamic and evolving menu that keeps Washington patrons eagerly anticipating new creations. Whether you're rushing in for a quick bite or settling down for a coffee and a sweet treat, Umami Kushi offers a warm, welcoming, and thoroughly delicious experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I needed to grab a quick meal before leaving for the airport and found this place nearby!I loved the wide range of Afro-Caribbean and Asian flavors. I settled on the Peruvian Chicken and found it flavorful and moist. It also comes with a small container of spicy green sauce which enhances the experience. If I’m in town again, I’d love to come back and try the other breads. Such a unique intersection!
August 31 · Jane TrieuFirst time here but it won't be our last! This place is fantastic! The food was so pretty I didn't want to eat it but it's sooooo delicious! The pull apart sweet roll was to die for!My friend said the Beignets were the best he'd ever had outside of Louisiana!!We happened to be running over in the area near seaward park and stopped in post run, we'll worth the detour!
May 31 · Kassie SamuelsenWe found this place after a trip to Japan had us longing for Japanese train station style bakery places, with things like yakisoba sandwich! If you’re looking for something like that this is the place-One of its kind, Umami Kushi/Okazua Pan has been around for 14 years and it’s the kind of warm place where the owner/staff has a conversation with you as they recommend what you’d like to have!We went for a post swim snack but ended up getting 4 of the crispy buns with savoury fillings- My favourite was the Adobe chicken and Curry beef! The Beignets which are weekend specials are out of this world- lightly sweet, super fluffy, warm and I wish I got more! There are Japanese drinks that you can couple your purchase with, they also make bags of crisps and Barbecue sauce in-house for retail!
June 04 · R KaurGreat food, friendly staff, great experience. We had the Jerk Chicken, Chicken Yakisoba, Salmon, and Beef Curry, and all of them were stellar! Great music and vibes as well!
September 07 · Ken MasumotoUmami Kushi will see me regularly from now on.The owner is phenomenal very funny, kind, and makes such good food! Everything is made to order—very warm n fresh! The chicken curry pan, beef curry pan, Peruvian chicken pan were all so crispy, filled so well with meet (not one of those 80% 20% meat buns). Torn between beef and Peruvian for my favs! The beignets omg. So soft, fluffy, and soft. The atmosphere is very anime inspired from the custom art, to memorabilia, to the music. Small place might not be ideal for a group over 5 to dine in but great to-go spot.We went late so they were out of a few flavors, have to try the jerk chicken once I’m back!
