Zimt Bakery Introduce
For residents across Illinois searching for truly unique, high-quality baked goods with a deep commitment to social and environmental responsibility, Zimt Bakery offers a delightful experience. Located in Chicago, Zimt Bakery isn't your average neighborhood shop; it is a specialty baker that has quickly become a beloved fixture in the local food community, delivering traditional German-inspired sweets with a modern, sustainable focus. Their dedication to craft, premium ingredients, and a mission-driven business model makes them a standout choice, whether you're planning a special event, looking for the perfect gift, or simply craving an extraordinary treat.
This woman-owned and operated establishment is built on a strong foundation of family tradition, with their Baker-in-Chief, Alina Tompert, utilizing cherished recipes passed down through four generations from her Oma Doris. The heart of their product line is "Plätzchen," the buttery-smooth, delightful German cookies traditionally associated with holidays, but elevated by Zimt for year-round enjoyment. By honoring her heritage while embracing a contemporary focus on ethical sourcing and community support, Zimt Bakery has carved out a sweet niche that resonates with the values of the Illinois consumer.
What truly distinguishes Zimt Bakery is the intersection of purpose and product. The business was initially inspired by the #BakersAgainstRacism social movement, which called for bakers to raise money for global social justice causes. This initial spark solidified Alina's commitment to using her passion for baking as a vehicle for positive change. Today, this principle is "baked into the heart of everything" they do, from sourcing ingredients to their operational practices and ongoing charitable contributions. For Illinois residents, supporting Zimt means choosing a business that consistently gives back to the community that supports it.
Zimt Bakery is based in Chicago, operating out of a facility designed to foster growth and collaboration in the food industry. While they may not have a traditional public storefront for walk-in traffic, their operational address places them strategically to serve the wider Chicago area and beyond.
The primary operational location is:
135 N Kedzie Ave, Chicago, IL 60612, USA
This address is within The Hatchery Chicago, a prominent food and beverage incubator on the West Side. This setup is crucial to understanding Zimt's model—it is a specialized, catering-focused bakery that utilizes a professional commercial kitchen. For local users, this means accessibility often comes in the form of pre-orders, local farmers' market appearances (such as being a proud vendor at the Green City Market), and scheduled take-out for custom orders, which ensures your cookies are always fresh and made to specification. This streamlined approach, emphasizing pre-order and custom service, allows them to maintain their incredibly high standards for ingredient quality and craftsmanship. Customers should always check their website or contact them directly for current pick-up and market schedules.
Zimt Bakery focuses on delivering a specialized product with exceptional customer service, making the entire process seamless for clients throughout the region.
- Takeout: Available for pre-ordered items, allowing for a quick and convenient pick-up of your fresh sweets.
- Custom & Large Event Orders: Specializing in customized Plätzchen for weddings, corporate gifts, birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebratory events.

- Seasonal Plätzchen Boxes: Offering hyper-seasonal and rotating limited-edition flavors, which are a modern and cross-cultural take on traditional German recipes.
- Online Ordering and Shipping: While primarily local, their model is built for efficient ordering, with options for shipping their high-quality, boxed cookies for the perfect gift or treat, as noted by customers who have ordered from a distance (even when they were previously based in California).
- Farmers' Market Presence: Regularly found at major Chicago farmers' markets like the Green City Market, providing a chance for customers to meet the baker and purchase products directly.
Zimt Bakery stands out not just for its German heritage and delicious treats, but for its core business philosophy, which resonates strongly with conscious consumers in Illinois.
- Authentic German Plätzchen: Their signature product is the Plätzchen (cookies), baked from four-generation-old German family recipes, offering a taste of European tradition.
- Commitment to Sustainability: The bakery is deeply dedicated to environmental sustainability. All baked goods are packaged responsibly using fully compostable or recyclable materials, ensuring a 100% plastic-free operation.
- Local and Ethical Sourcing: They prioritize sourcing the highest quality ingredients, including produce from local Illinois farmers, pasture-raised butter from regional Amish farms, and pasture-raised eggs from family farms. More exotic ingredients are always sourced organic and fair trade.
- Social Impact and Giving Back: Every year, Zimt donates a portion of its proceeds to organizations in need, living up to its mission of "Baking for a Better World" and reinforcing its deep ties to community betterment.
- Gourmet Quality and Taste: As one customer enthusiastically noted, the cookies are "made from quality ingredients, and the proof is in the taste," with delicious flavors like coffee sandwich, pumpkin, cranberry, maple pecan, and apple cider, all while being a portion-controlled indulgence.
- Thoughtful Packaging: The cookies are presented in "very cute" and attractive boxing, making them an ideal, ready-to-gift item for any occasion.
- Payment Convenience: Accepting major credit cards for quick and easy transactions.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I purchased two boxes of cookies with 12 cookies in each box. I love the coffee sandwich cookie, and the pumpkin and cranberry are delicious too! I haven't tried maple pecan yet, but apple cider is very good. These cookies are made from quality ingredients, and the proof is in the taste. So delicious, and only 100 to 110 calories per serving of 2 cookies. I will be sure to order some for the holidays, as I know my family will absolutely love them too!The boxing is very cute too!
October 17 · Marie NicklasI came across Zimt Bakery at a little local market in Long Beach when they were based in California. I couldn’t think of a more perfect dessert for a spring bridal shower so I messaged Alina and she helped me put together a custom order. Everything went very smoothly from ordering, to shipping to enjoying! Everyone loved them! Thank you for making a special day a little more special! 💕
May 31 · HeidiThe cookies are lovely to look at and even better to taste. They use interesting flavors that are very mild and go together well. The boxes make great gifts. They promise new seasonal flavors and I look forward to trying them all! A special treat, for sure. Both the two new flavors of plaetzchen are excellent. Mild flavors that are well blended. They are a joy to present at the table and definitely a joy to eat. My favorite was the blood orange but my son loved the pineapple, so both have their fans. The creative combination of subtle flavors is impressive. Makes you wonder what they will present next! Highly recommend Sunrise and Sunset flavors.
January 26 · Lisa TekmetarovicWe ordered Plaetzchen from Zimt Bakery for an event and our guests enjoyed them very much. The cookies combine German baking traditions with American tastes, which was exactly what we were looking for. It was great working with Alina. Thank you!
October 11 · Cultural Affairs German Consulate General ChicagoI purchased the red, white and blue cookies from an Artisan Market and they are delicious! I sampled the blueberry cookie at the market and was hooked. I’m a cookie baker too and these were outstanding! Highly recommend!
