Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery: A Southern Escape in Arlington, Virginia
For local residents and visitors across Northern Virginia, a craving for authentic Southern charm and the unforgettable flavors of New Orleans often leads straight to Arlington’s Courthouse neighborhood. Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery, established in 2010, is much more than just a bakery or a simple coffee shop; it is a beloved community gathering spot that faithfully showcases the rich culinary traditions and warm hospitality of the South, right here in Virginia. This casual, counter-service eatery is the brainchild of Louisiana native and acclaimed Chef David Guas, a two-time Food & Wine “People’s Best New Chef: Mid-Atlantic” nominee and cookbook author known for his frequent television appearances, including on The Today Show and as host of the Travel Channel’s American Grilled. Chef Guas’s personal mission is evident in every dish, working alongside his talented team, or “krewe,” to craft a menu that balances delectable Southern sweets with a variety of savory, comforting casual eats.
Stepping inside Bayou Bakery is designed to feel like a quick and delightful trip to the Big Easy. The interior décor is funky, eclectic, and authentically New Orleans, featuring exposed brick, light-colored wood, warm cement flooring, and playful nods to the culture like a four-foot water meter stamp—an iconic symbol of the resilience of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The atmosphere is vibrant, laid-back, and welcoming, creating a “front porch” vibe that invites patrons to relax and stay a while. Whether you are looking for a quick coffee before work, a hearty Southern breakfast, a comforting lunch, or a sweet treat to cap off your day, Bayou Bakery is a cherished establishment that has successfully kept the heritage of New Orleans cuisine alive in the heart of Virginia. It is a one-stop shop for a genuine taste of Southern foodways, earning national praise in publications like Southern Living and The New York Times for its dedication to quality and culture.

Features / Highlights
The menu at Bayou Bakery is a testament to the culinary culture of New Orleans and the broader South, featuring many fan favorites that have garnered regional and national acclaim. The following highlights represent the unique offerings that draw crowds from across Virginia:
- Signature New Orleans Confections: The traditional, pillowy Beignets (often called 'Ben-yays'), served three per order and buried in powdered sugar, are a must-try. Other Southern sweets include Pralines, Southern Layer Cakes, and daily-baked goods like seasonal scones, muffins, croissants, and cornbread.
- Award-Winning Sandwiches: Their famous Muff-a-Lotta sandwich—a New Orleans classic featuring salami, mortadella, smoked ham, provolone, and olive salad on a toasted Italian roll—was named one of the “Best Sandwiches in the U.S.” by Food & Wine. Another local favorite is the Roast Beef Arm Drip Sandwich, a sloppy, peppery roast-beef po’ boy modeled after a NOLA classic, served on French bread flown in from Leidenheimer Baking Co.
- Essential Southern Savories: The menu is robust with Southern comfort classics, including their famed Buttermilk Biscuits, often enjoyed with Creole Cream Cheese & Pepper Jelly, and the rich Chicken and Smoked Sausage Gumbo. Other popular savory items include Pimiento Cheese and Ritz Crackers, True Grits (made from stone-ground White Corn milled locally at George Washington’s Gristmill), and their seasonal Avocado Benedict served over crisply fried tater tots.
- Chef-Driven Specialties: Owner Chef David Guas's heritage, which includes his father's Cuban background, occasionally shines through in selected dishes, adding an unexpected but delicious layer to the menu's Southern focus. The cafe also features a rotating selection of daily baked goods and seasonal items.
- Specialty Coffee & Drinks: Beyond classic coffee offerings, a unique highlight is the highly-rated Bayou Buzz'n Beehive Latte, a specialty coffee drink featuring a homemade syrup of local honey, vanilla bean, and orange zest. Their unique 'chilled' cocktail program pays homage to New Orleans with grab-n-geaux pouches and half-gallons of frozen daiquiris.
- James Beard Recognition: Chef Guas’s first cookbook, Dam Good Sweet: Desserts to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth, New Orleans Style, featuring many of the bakery’s own recipes, was a James Beard Award finalist, further cementing the quality and authenticity of the sweet offerings available.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This place is busy! Definitely order ahead. Breakfast sandwich was kind of small but perfectly proportioned. Think the bread type could’ve been more inspiring. Iced coffee worked its magic on me. Perfectly sweet but not too much. I’ll need to plan to go back to try their beignets and other treats.
July 02 · Cassie SmithMy wife didn't love the flavor of her latte (but everybody has different taste preferences). The muffins and scones were enjoyed by all in my family. Service was good! Would definitely come back on next visit.
July 04 · Jon HoodFood was great here. I got the biscuits and gravy (Louisiana style) and everything tasted homemade and fresh. I followed that by a whole milk hot latte, pretty good. My boyfriend got a avocado toast, he enjoyed it. We shared the beignets and they tasted good they were not to sweet which I liked. We went on a Saturday which you can imagine was busy, but it was fast service. We will be coming here again for Brunch.
November 27 · Fabiola CastroThis place is too small. The line wrapped through the cafe and made moving about difficult especially with the extra tables they have. We got a breakfast sandwich with ham and egg on a roll, a sandwich with sausage and egg on a biscuit and a seasonal scone (chocolate cherry). The roll sandwich was good but it was also the size of a slider, which made the price seem outrageous. The biscuit was a typical biscuit breakfast sandwich, we should have gotten some cheese as the biscuit was a bit dry. The scone was like the person that made the filling burnt everything.
March 30 · Alex DeMartinoGreat spot for breakfast in my opinion. The prices are decent, but the service is slow due to the FRESH made to order food. This is not a fast food rush type spot. They are quick with some items but the more complex meal items they are making from scratch and you can taste it.Great to grab coffee and beignets or a biscuit sandwich.
