Berkshire Mountain Bakery Introduce
berkshire mountain bakery housatonic
For anyone in Massachusetts who appreciates the art and science of baking, a visit to the Berkshire Mountain Bakery is a pilgrimage worth making. Nestled in the picturesque village of Housatonic, this bakery has been a local institution since 1986. It’s a place where tradition, passion, and high-quality ingredients come together to create what many consider to be some of the best breads and baked goods in the country. Founded by master baker Richard Bourdon, the bakery is a testament to the power of natural fermentation and a deep-seated love for the craft. For locals, it's more than just a place to buy bread; it's a source of wholesome, nourishing food that is made with integrity.
The bakery’s reputation is built on its exceptional sourdough bread. Bourdon, who trained in Europe, brought his expertise in natural fermentation and traditional baking techniques to the Berkshires, and the result is a product that is both delicious and highly digestible. Customers have been known to drive from all over New England and even New York to get their hands on a loaf. But the bakery’s offerings extend far beyond its famous bread. Their almond croissants are often lauded as being among the "best in the country," and their sourdough pizzas have a cult following. The bakery’s commitment to quality is evident in every item, from the flaky pastries to the unique molasses cookies that are a classic favorite.
The Berkshire Mountain Bakery is also known for its unique way of giving back to the community. They often sell day-old bread at a significantly reduced price from a self-serve box outside the bakery, a practice that not only minimizes waste but also makes their exceptional bread accessible to everyone. This simple act of community care is just one example of the bakery’s ethos. It’s a business that feels deeply connected to its roots and is a proud part of the Housatonic and wider Berkshire community. The welcoming staff, who are often happy to share the story of the bakery, only add to the charm, making every visit a memorable experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Staff were very kind. They explained how the bakery started long time ago and showed all the details for baking. Thank you for the tour of the bake shop. Sourdough pizza was great. It was also impressive to see day-old bread being sold cheaply outside.
August 25 · perle75nycFirst, they have some of the best almond croissants in the country. Flaky and just the right amount of filling. Second, the molasses cookies were hard enough to crack a tooth (but thankfully I didn’t). We appreciate and revere the craftsmanship behind their sourdough masterpieces.
June 02 · Roger TipleyWhat a great little bakery and artisanal pizza place. The different kinds of breads and baked goods are delicious.our favorites are the almond , chocolate and cinnamon croissants. We also love the spinach croissant. The have different kinds of cream cheese mixes and our favorite is the cherry cream cheese when you can find it. Their salted homemade butters are amazing and their soups that are frozen fresh are to die for. Their pizzas are delicious also and come in a variety of choices.
November 06 · James Grise11.24.24 What a little gem for us out of state visitors who happened to visit for the 1st time. Cars were pulling in non-stop. There was day old bread on sale to the right of the entrance to the shop. Lots of varieties of breads inside to choose from.
November 27 · Margaret HonanCompletely Obsessed with BMB!! Their Garlic butter is one of a kind! They have tiny caneles so delicious!! Cheese and Herb Ciabattas YUMM! My favorite restaurant Cello in Lenox uses their Semolina Bread as an Appetizer (not like any other typical bread appetizer you’ll ever have)
