Catania Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Catania Bakery, located at 1404 North Capitol St NW, is far more than just a place to buy Baked Goods; it is a profound piece of Washington, DC's culinary and cultural history. Operating continuously since 1932, it represents the last remnant of the city's once-thriving Italian-American neighborhood, sometimes referred to as 'Little Italy,' on North Capitol Street. The bakery was originally founded by the Caruso family, immigrants from the province of Catania, Sicily, who brought their old-world tradition of Italian bread-making to the District of Columbia, initially selling their loaves door-to-door.
Today, Catania Bakery primarily functions as a critical Wholesale bakery, supplying its famous, crusty Italian bread, rolls, and submarines to numerous Italian restaurants, delis, and groceries across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. This wholesale operation is the backbone of the business, ensuring its continued operation and its status as a supplier to legendary DC establishments known for their Italian subs.
Crucially for local DC residents, this venerable institution opens its doors to the public for limited retail hours, offering a unique opportunity to purchase the same high-quality, handcrafted goods enjoyed by the city's top eateries, alongside a special selection of pastries. The philosophy of the bakery remains dedicated to handcrafted quality, utilizing old-fashioned techniques and recipes—like the one for their signature bread, which uses only full-strength flour, water, yeast, and salt—that have remained unchanged since 1932. This dedication to tradition, even amidst the rapidly transforming neighborhoods of NoMa and Bloomingdale, is what makes a visit to Catania Bakery a genuinely historic and delicious experience.
Location and Accessibility
Catania Bakery is strategically located at 1404 North Capitol St NW, Washington, DC 20002, USA. This address places it just south of P Street in the Truxton Circle/Bloomingdale area, making it an accessible destination for those living or working in the surrounding neighborhoods, including Shaw and NoMa. While North Capitol Street is a major artery, the bakery maintains a low-key, historic presence.
The experience of visiting Catania Bakery is distinct, heavily influenced by its limited retail hours:
- Transit Options: The location is reachable via several Metrobus routes along North Capitol Street. For Metro access, it is a significant walk or short bus ride from the NOMA-Gallaudet U or Shaw-Howard University Metro stations (Green/Yellow Lines).
- Retail Hours: It is imperative for local users to note the limited retail schedule. The shop is primarily a Wholesale bakery, and its public hours are concentrated on the weekend to accommodate the local community. Generally, the shop is open on Friday and Saturday mornings, with times that can vary but typically fall between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Saturday, and a shorter window on Friday (e.g., 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM). These hours are highly subject to change and stock sellout.
- The 'Early Bird' Rule: Customers frequently share that the best and most sought-after items, particularly the specialty pastries like the famous croissants, often sell out quickly. A successful visit necessitates an early start to the day.
- Walk-ins Only: The retail operation is designed for a Quick visit with a focus on Takeout, serving a steady line of neighborhood regulars and devoted pastry lovers.
Services Offered
Despite its primary function as a Wholesale bakery, the retail window at Catania Bakery offers a focused and highly coveted menu of baked goods. The offerings emphasize quality, tradition, and freshness, reflecting the bakery’s long history.
- Classic Italian Breads: The foundation of the business, these are the same loaves supplied to DC's best Italian delis. Varieties include the classic One pound loaf, Mini rolls, Round loaves, and Submarines. The bread is known for its light dusting of semolina flour and authentic Italian texture.
- Handcrafted Croissants: A major highlight and popular specialty for retail customers, offered in varieties such as Butter, Chocolate, Almond, and the seasonal or highly-sought-after Apple and Strawberry versions. These are often noted for their superior freshness and flakiness.
- Italian Biscotti: A staple of the bakery, available in several flavors including Original, Chocolate, Anise, and Lemon. These long-lasting cookies are also available for purchase through the bakery’s online shop.
- Assorted Cookies and Pastries: In addition to biscotti, the bakery consistently offers a supply of fresh-baked cookies and other traditional Italian pastries, sometimes including Canolis and Roses, though availability is dependent on the day.
- Muffins: A selection of classic muffin flavors often including Blueberry, Banana Nut, and Cranberry, available primarily during the Friday and Saturday retail hours.
- Coffee: The bakery offers simple, hot Coffee to pair with the morning pastries, perfect for customers planning a Quick visit.
- Service Options: All public sales are based on Takeout and Walk-ins only, designed for a fast and efficient transaction during the limited opening hours.
Features / Highlights
Catania Bakery’s unique operation and deep history provide several key features that make it a standout for DC residents:
- Historical Authenticity: Operating since 1932, Catania Bakery is an unparalleled institution in the District. Its continued use of the same recipes and a historic white porcelain oven (dating back to 1946) offers customers a tangible connection to DC’s past, and specifically to its Italian-American heritage. The shop is considered the 'last remnant' of that community.
- Wholesale Quality for Retail: Customers purchasing retail goods are buying the exact same, exceptionally fresh Breads and baked items that are delivered to top DC Italian restaurants and delis. This wholesale quality ensures an unmatched level of freshness and authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere.
- Cult-Favorite Croissants: The croissants are legendary among DC locals, frequently mentioned in customer reviews as "amazing" and "the freshest tasting." Securing a box of these on a Saturday morning is a prized routine for neighborhood residents.
- Exceptional Value: Historically, Catania Bakery has been known for its low prices, providing high-quality, authentic Italian baked goods at a fraction of the cost of many modern artisanal competitors. This commitment to affordability enhances its appeal as a community hub.
- The Exclusive Experience: The limited hours (Friday and Saturday mornings) create a sense of exclusivity and tradition. Lining up early to secure the best of the day’s baking, and sometimes meeting the owner or a guest host, provides a unique, neighborhood-focused community experience rarely found in a large city.

What is worth choosing
Catania Bakery is absolutely worth choosing for any DC resident who values history, quality, and community. It is the premier destination for authentic, old-school Italian baking in the District. What makes it especially worth choosing is the ability to tap into the high-volume freshness of a Wholesale bakery. Unlike a standard retail shop, when you visit Catania on a Saturday morning, you are buying goods produced on a scale and with an efficiency reserved for supplying entire restaurants, ensuring unparalleled quality and freshness.
The primary reason to make the effort to visit during the limited hours is twofold: the traditional Italian Bread and the much-lauded Croissants. The bread is a true classic, made with the same simple, time-tested recipe since 1932, offering an authentic taste of Italian-American heritage. The croissants, including the Butter, Chocolate, and Almond varieties, are considered some of the best in the city, frequently selling out within the first few hours of opening. For a Quick visit to stock up on weekend essentials, including a loaf of authentic Italian bread, a bag of rich Biscotti, and a dozen or more of those incredible croissants, Catania Bakery provides a rewarding and historically rich experience that cannot be replicated by any other bakery in the District of Columbia.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It breaks my heart that they open only one day of the week because everything is amazing and at a great price. An inversor should take this place back to the glory! Avery bakery in the area made the same things… this is the only one with international variety!
September 06 · Jonathan RiosA local and historic gem. Come on Friday or Saturday mornings from 730-1030, the rest of the time they're just for delivery / catering. The croissants are amazing, if you get there at the right time and they're fresh out of the oven, buy them all :-) Or if you get there, and they just sold out, it might be because I got there ahead of you with my coworkers (our tradition is to go every Friday morning).
December 21 · Joe BrophyI love this place so much. Me and my fiancés favorite thing to do on Saturdays is to grab some delicious bread and chat with Al. The bread and pastries are fantastic. It’s the only pleasant place on the block, really.
April 23 · Sarah BarcombAn adorable place! The owner is a very sweet person who will give you excellent food recommendations. The croissants are also pretty darn good. Try the strawberry or chocolate! I only got a pic of the blueberry muffin (yum!) and the sfogliatelle (citrus ricotta filling)..I ate the croissants too fast.
March 21 · Anna TuroCatania Bakery is a small shop only open Saturday mornings for pastry and bread (they primarily do wholesale during the week). The croissants are cheap and amazing! The cookies are handmade - a bit pricier because of the ingredients but so amazing. Their shortbread tarts taste like Christmas and joy. It’s run by a sweet, older couple who make A+ morning conversation.
