Hot Bagels and Bialys Introduce
When it comes to the quintessential New York bagel experience, few places embody the spirit and tradition quite like Hot Bagels and Bialys in Brooklyn. This isn't just another bagel shop; it's a neighborhood cornerstone, a place where decades of history, craftsmanship, and community are baked into every single bite. Located on Avenue U, this establishment has been serving up authentic, old-school bagels and bialys for over 40 years, earning a reputation for unwavering quality and a no-frills, honest approach to their craft.
The moment you walk into Hot Bagels and Bialys, you're immediately hit with the unmistakable aroma of a real bakery—the kind of honest, brutal heat of ovens working tirelessly to produce perfect bagels. This isn't a place for fancy gimmicks or trendy aesthetics. It’s a place dedicated to the simple, time-honored process of making bagels the right way: with flour, water, yeast, and a deep-seated passion for tradition. This commitment to authenticity is what keeps generations of customers coming back, time and time again. For many, a visit here is more than just a transaction; it's a nostalgic trip back to a simpler time, a comforting ritual that connects them to their roots and community.
The owners and staff at Hot Bagels and Bialys believe in letting the product speak for itself. As one customer eloquently put it, they "don’t like to talk, they like to prove it." And prove it they do, with every hot bagel pulled from the oven and every schmear perfectly applied. This dedication to quality is evident in the taste and texture of their bagels, which are celebrated for being consistently fresh, chewy, and delicious, no matter what time of day you visit. This is a rare quality in a city where many bagel shops prepare their inventory early in the morning and let it sit for hours. At Hot Bagels and Bialys, the ovens are always working, ensuring that even if you drop in at 11 a.m., you’ll still get a fresh, hot bagel that's ready to be devoured.

Hot Bagels and Bialys serves up these oniony, chewy delicacies that many have forgotten. High-Quality Spreads and Toppings: The bagels are perfectly complemented by a variety of homemade spreads and high-quality toppings. The selection is classic and well-executed, focusing on quality ingredients that enhance the bagel without overpowering it.
Other Freshly Baked Goods: In addition to bagels and bialys, the shop also offers a selection of other baked goods, including muffins. These are made fresh and provide a nice alternative for customers looking for a different kind of sweet or savory treat.
Coffee and Beverages: To complete the perfect morning meal, Hot Bagels and Bialys serves fresh coffee and tea. It's the ideal pairing for a hot bagel with a schmear, a cup of tea for the old-timers, or a simple coffee to start your day. The beverage options are straightforward and satisfying, just like their food.
Hot Bagels and Bialys stands out in a crowded market thanks to several key features and highlights that make it a true local treasure.

They resist modern trends and gimmicks, focusing instead on the core fundamentals of what makes a great bagel. This dedication to tradition is a source of pride for the community and a major draw for customers who appreciate authenticity.
High-Quality Ingredients: The quality of their spreads, lox, and other ingredients is consistently praised. The Nova lox is described as "silky" and a "revelation," while the whitefish salad is a perfect match for a hot bagel. This attention to detail in their ingredients shows a deep respect for their customers and their craft.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Bagels and Bialys: A Love Letter in Sesame Seeds and SteamSome places aren’t just stores. They’re cathedrals. Bagels and Bialys is one of them. You walk in and the smell hits you — not the antiseptic whiff of “artisanal” nonsense, but the honest, brutal heat of ovens working overtime, cranking out old-school New York bagels like it’s still 1975 and people actually gave a damn about what they fed you. There’s a kind of quiet dignity in that. No Instagram stations. No ironic neon signs. Just flour, water, yeast, and soul. For me, stepping inside was like a hit straight to the chest — a thousand Saturday mornings with my Zadie flashing back at once. Hot bag in hand, a smear of whitefish salad barely contained inside a still-steaming everything bagel. Pure memory. Pure comfort. Pure joy.Their own words say it best — they don’t like to talk, they like to prove it. And brother, they do. The spreads are lush, the Nova lox is a silky, briny revelation, and the bialys? If you know, you know. That oniony, chewy kiss of old-world magic that too many have forgotten. Muffins, coffee, a cup of tea for the old-timers still doing things the right way — it’s all here, made fresh, made right.Forty years. Forty years of feeding a community, no shortcuts, no sellouts. That deserves your respect. And your appetite. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself standing outside their unassuming storefront window, do yourself a favor: go in. Order something with a schmear. Rip into it while it’s still hot. Don’t overthink it. Don’t Instagram it. Just eat.Because places like this? They’re a disappearing act.And every bite is a small, beautiful rebellion against a world that keeps trying to forget what real tastes like.Five stars. Would follow the smell of those ovens anywhere.
April 26 · Daniel Stepel (The last Baby Boomer)This place is slowly becoming my favorite bagel place in the neighborhood.Unlike other bagel places, you can come here at 11am and actually get a fresh bagel as opposed to one that’s been sitting out since 6am.The service is also truly excellent. Excellent place!
May 27 · Nicholas SatchellThe store is located in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn. They prepare a variety of bagels which are a nice size and well-prepared. Muffins, croissants, salads, drinks and breakfast items are also available. The tuna salad was excellent and tasty. The egg salad is also very good.
