Street Wheat Introduce
This article is a resource for residents of the Minnesota region, particularly those in the Twin Cities, seeking out truly exceptional, artisan-made pastries from a dedicated local business.
Introduction / Overview
For local pastry enthusiasts, Street Wheat is a hidden gem in the Minneapolis micro-bakery scene, celebrated almost exclusively for its mastery of the croissant. Operating out of an Uptown location, this business is the passion project of a dedicated baker who focuses on high-quality ingredients, traditional techniques, and small-batch production. Street Wheat is not your typical full-service bakery; it’s an artisanal operation, famously known for its Croissant Sundays.
The philosophy here is simple: "No machines. No middlemen. Just croissants, made with real butter and a healthy disregard for the status quo." This commitment to the craft is evident in every flaky, buttery layer. Local word-of-mouth is overwhelmingly positive, with customers calling them "some of the best croissants I’ve had in a long time!" and noting that neighborhood competitors "are no comparison to yours and are much pricier."
The core offering is the traditional French laminated pastry, but Street Wheat truly shines through its creative, rotating weekly specials. These unique flavors—like the much-loved Cheddar Scallion or the immensely popular Jalapeño Popper croissant—keep the community returning week after week, eager to see what new creation the baker has conjured. As a local business, Street Wheat prioritizes quality over volume, using local suppliers for key ingredients like Hope Creamery butter and Baker's Field flour, ensuring a truly Minnesota-made product.
Because of its limited operating model, it’s best to view Street Wheat as a highly anticipated weekly event, not a daily stop. Their dedication to quality and service—exemplified by surprising a customer with a much-desired, off-menu Cheddar Scallion croissant—demonstrates a strong commitment to their local clientele.
Location and Accessibility
Street Wheat is perfectly positioned in the residential and charming Wedge neighborhood of Uptown Minneapolis, making it a true community bakery. It operates directly from a storefront porch, creating a unique, intimate, and highly local pickup experience.
- Address: 2701 Colfax Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55408, USA
- Neighborhood: Located in the heart of Uptown, this residential corner of Colfax Avenue South provides an ideal, accessible neighborhood spot.
- Accessibility: As a micro-bakery operating from a porch, accessibility can vary slightly compared to a dedicated retail space. Customers generally approach the porch for pickup, and the location is easily walkable for many area residents.
For those driving, street parking is typically available in the surrounding neighborhood. Given that the operating hours are limited to a short window on Sunday mornings, local users should plan their visit accordingly, often arriving early to avoid the rush or the disappointment of a sell-out.
Services Offered
Street Wheat operates a streamlined, focused service model centered around its signature pastry, making it a specialist in its field:
- Weekly Retail Sales (Croissant Sundays): The storefront porch is open to the public every Sunday morning for a limited time (typically 9 AM to 11 AM, or until sold out).
- Artisan Croissant Production: Offering a focused menu of classic and inventive croissants.
- Online Pre-Ordering: While walk-up sales are available, customers are highly encouraged to order ahead online, ensuring they secure their desired quantity and flavors before they sell out.
- Specialty Flavors: A rotating selection of unique Weekly Specials, which are highly anticipated and frequently change. Past examples include Jalapeño Popper, Cheddar & Scallion, Brie/Fig/Honey, French Onion, and Tiramisu.
Features / Highlights
Street Wheat’s unique model and commitment to craft provide several distinct features that appeal strongly to the Minneapolis community:
- Croissant Specialization: This is a dedicated artisan bakery focusing almost exclusively on creating the absolute best possible croissants. The quality is consistently described as superior to many higher-priced competitors.
- The Sunday Institution: The "Croissant Sundays" model has established the bakery as a weekly ritual and a staple in the Uptown community, creating a buzz and sense of anticipation around their limited hours.
- Innovative, Savory Specials: Unlike bakeries that focus only on traditional flavors, Street Wheat is known for pushing the boundaries with inventive, often savory, weekly specials like Cheddar Scallion, which cater to a local palate looking for something unique.
- Commitment to Local Ingredients: By sourcing high-quality, local components, such as butter from Hope Creamery in Hope, MN, and flour from Baker's Field in Minneapolis, the bakery supports the regional food ecosystem.
- True Micro-Bakery Model: The small-scale, owner-operated approach ensures direct quality control and a personal, friendly experience, as demonstrated by the baker's thoughtful gestures in customer service.
- Core Menu Stability: While specials rotate, customers can rely on the excellence of the classic offerings: Plain ($4), Chocolate ($5), and Almond ($5) croissants.

What is Worth Choosing Street Wheat
For Minnesotans seeking the pinnacle of laminated dough, Street Wheat offers a unique and worthwhile experience that transcends the ordinary bakery visit. It is worth choosing for the sheer, uncompromised quality of its croissants. In a region with many strong bakeries, Street Wheat has carved out a niche by specializing and excelling at one thing: creating perfectly flaky, deeply flavorful, butter-rich pastries that customers rave about.
Choosing Street Wheat means participating in a unique local ritual—the Croissant Sunday pickup—and supporting a dedicated micro-bakery that uses local, high-quality ingredients. It’s an ideal choice for the user who is tired of mass-produced pastries and desires an authentic, scratch-made product. The rotating, inventive specials add an element of excitement to your weekend, making a trip to Uptown not just an errand, but a culinary adventure.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beautifully baked croissants. I ordered ahead of time for the plain and chocolate croissants, and wanted also the special “Cheddar Scallion” croissants. Nikhil informed me that the CS is not available this week, thus I went to the plain and chocolate ones. At pickup, I was handed a box with my ordered croissants and a bag with 2 savory (Chedder Scallion) ones! It was a pleasant surprise from Street Wheat. Keep it up The local bakery in my neighborhood’s croissants are no comparison to yours and are much pricier.
