Tartine Pasadena Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Tartine Pasadena
California’s culinary scene is rich with local gems, and for residents who appreciate true artisan baking, few names resonate as strongly as Tartine Bakery. Originating in San Francisco and renowned worldwide, Tartine has brought its craft—a thoughtful expression of modern baking through good food and warm experiences—to Southern California, with its inviting outpost, Tartine Pasadena. This bakery isn't just a place to grab a bite; it's a dedication to the craft of naturally leavened bread, made with a commitment to quality ingredients, long fermentation, and traditional methods taught by masters.
Tartine’s foundation is built on the pursuit of "real bread"—a substantial, dark, blistered loaf with a voluptuous, wildly open crumb and the sweet, subtly acidic character of natural fermentation. This commitment extends beyond their famous loaves to a wide array of rustic, elegant pastries and thoughtfully crafted tartines and sandwiches. The Pasadena location quickly earned a loyal following by bringing this world-class quality to a local, neighborhood setting. Whether you’re stopping in for a famously flaky Morning Bun or picking up a Country Loaf for your dinner table, Tartine Pasadena delivers an unparalleled bread and pastry experience right here in Los Angeles County.

Features / Highlights
Tartine Pasadena’s appeal rests on its commitment to quality, a wide selection of goods, and a uniquely West Coast atmosphere. Here are some of the key highlights that draw California food lovers:
- Nationally Acclaimed Sourdough Bread: Tartine is internationally celebrated for its naturally leavened bread, particularly the COUNTRY loaf. The meticulous process involves a natural leavener, a high-hydration dough, and long fermentation, resulting in a dark, crackling crust and an incomparably springy, flavorful crumb. Other popular loaves include OAT PORRIDGE and SEEDED SPROUTED RYE.
- Iconic Pastries: The pastry case is filled with classics and creative favorites. The MORNING BUN is a signature, made from laminated croissant dough rolled with sugar, orange zest, and cinnamon. Other viennoiseries like the CROISSANT and PAIN AU CHOCOLAT are consistently praised for their quality and buttery flavor.
- Gourmet Sandwiches and Tartines: The bakery elevates the simple sandwich using its world-class bread. Popular choices include the PRESSED HAM & GRUYERE SANDWICH, the AVOCADO TARTINE, and the PRESSED TURKEY SANDWICH, showcasing the versatility of their sourdough base.

What is Worth Choosing
For any California local looking for a definitive bakery experience, Tartine Pasadena stands out. What makes it truly worth choosing is the unparalleled quality that stems from a deep reverence for the traditional baking process. You are choosing a product where the bakers "sweat the details," meticulously managing fermentation and using high-quality, often house-milled, flour.
The Country Loaf is the undeniable star and a cornerstone of California's modern bread movement. It's often described as a pilgrimage for serious bread lovers. Pairing this loaf with a simple spread of SIDE CULTURED BUTTER and SIDE JAM is an experience in pure flavor.
Beyond the bread, the pastries offer a perfect balance of flavor—delicious and not overly sweet. Customers frequently rave about the Morning Bun for its flaky layers and citrus-cinnamon flavor, and the Croissant is often cited as among the best in the region. If you prefer savory, the PRESSED HAM & GRUYERE SANDWICH is a top-tier choice, combining the sturdy, flavorful sourdough with rich fillings. Even simple items like the YOGURT & HOUSE MADE GRANOLA are elevated, with the plain yogurt providing a refreshing, less sugary start to your day.
In essence, choosing Tartine Pasadena is choosing a commitment to excellence. It’s a chance to enjoy world-class baking—from the iconic sourdough to the flaky pastries—in a friendly, local Southern California setting, making it the perfect destination for your next breakfast, brunch, or light lunch outing. It is the gold standard for naturally leavened bread in the Pasadena area and a vital part of the state’s food culture.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very nice croissants, breads and other baked items! Coffee is usually really good, they have a great selection of coffee beans available, however a few times one of the baristas burned my coffee or milk. So, it depends on who is in charge of the coffee machine. Most of the time is good. Nice cute vibe and great service.
June 18 · Nadia MartinsVery tasty! I’ve visited a few times and have enjoyed a delicious breakfast sandwich, strawberry danish, and yogurt parfait. It is a higher price point than some bakeries but to me, its higher quality. The food is flavorful and not overly sweet. Usually the yogurt in parfaits are full of sugar but not at Tartine, I think they use plain yogurt which was refreshing. Staff was nice. they only have outdoor seating. I go early and have found free street parking. there were short lines inside but I’m there early and that probably depends on the time of day.
April 20 · K THave you heard of Tartine bakery? If not, should head over to the newly opened Tartine in Pasadena and try their pastries and breads and then you know why you should definitely know this bakery. They are famous for their artisan pastry and breads. In fact, Tartine was on Neflix’s second season Chef Show. In the show, Chad Robertson, the co-owner showed the TV host Jon Fareau and Roy Choi how to make sourdough bread.Every time I go to San Francisco, I have to visit Tartine to get their croissant and sourdough sandwich even though I have to wait in a long line. The bread truly is spectacular, with incredible flavor and texture that may just ruin mass-produced sliced bread for visitors who fall in love with the good stuff. Tartine’s San Francisco cafe is a carb-lover’s paradise, with multiple different types of delicious rustic and classic French bread recipes baked up fresh daily. When I heard that Tartine is opening a bakery in Pasadena, I was excited and looking forward to its opening.I finally got a chance to visit the bakery today after church. Got myself a regular and an Almond croissant, a sourdough turkey sandwich for my wife and a cup of coffee and ice tea. The croissants are heavenly. They are very butterly and crispy. I loved the multilayer structure of the croissant. That’s indication of a good crafted pastry. No wonder Tartine has won so many awards. With technical prowess and refined creativity leading to delicious results, Tartine has won a number of prestigious food awards. It won a James Beard Award for excellence in baking and pastry, and it’s regularly named to “best of” lists in the Bay Area and for the United States as a whole. So now that Tartine is here locally with locations throughout LA, we don’t have to go to SF in order to get the taste of the famous and delicious breads and pastries.
March 14 · regis kwongGet an incredible loaf and get out. I drove up to go specifically here and was a little let down. Their book is nicer than the actual place.I guess I was picturing baking heaven, not an overpriced cafe & bakery. The rest is all delicious but it was $16 for a piece of toast and an avocado. I just feel like they could have given me 1 more piece of toast to make it a sandwich or scrape away some of the 10 avocados they put in this one piece of toast. Just felt bad and visually disappointing. The book and images online were so promising! The marketing for this place is good, they just didn’t live up to the hype.If I ever pass one, A Tartine Bakery, I’ll consider getting one of their incredible looking loaves, but I can get similar baked goods elsewhere and for less without sacrificing quality.
March 15 · Kelsey KI’ve been a longtime fan of the tartine in SF on Guererro. This is not quite the same, as there’s zero vibe at this location and the selection is sparse. It’s not cozy or inviting and doesn’t have a huge tantalizing display case to gawk over. Morning buns completely sell out for the day by 12 so I’m learning the only way to make sure you get what you need, is by ordering online.
