The Donut Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For decades, the simple, reliable donut shop has been a cornerstone of the morning routine for Californians. In the heart of the coastal community of San Pedro, there is one such establishment that has cultivated a dedicated following: The Donut. This beloved local institution transcends the typical grab-and-go experience by offering what many customers describe as genuine, handcrafted perfection—the kind of donut that reminds people of what a true donut should taste like.
Operating as a classic Donut Shop and Dessert Shop, The Donut is all about tradition, quality, and a commitment to flavor profiles that are deep-rooted in baking history. One passionate customer, after 30 years of searching, declared that the cinnamon, glazed, and chocolate donuts were "99.99% like the ones I grew up with in Edo. Mex. and CDMX," offering an authentic, nostalgic taste rarely found north of the border. This kind of high praise underscores the shop’s dedication to providing a product that stands miles apart from the mass-produced, "air puffed" alternatives offered by larger chains.
While the shop has a casual, no-fuss atmosphere that makes it perfect for a Quick Visit or Solo Dining, the quality of the food speaks for itself. Customers who prioritize substance over fleeting trends will appreciate the focus on quality ingredients, whether it's in their signature donuts or their surprisingly high-caliber breakfast sandwiches. The shop's unpretentious approach—described as having the ambiance of "old time donut shops"—is part of its charm, serving as a genuine piece of San Pedro's history and a testament to the art of traditional donut-making.
Location and Accessibility
The Donut is centrally located in the historic and vibrant city of San Pedro, a district within the city of Los Angeles, California. This placement makes it a highly convenient stop for residents and commuters throughout the South Bay area.
The shop's address is: 1615 S Gaffey St, San Pedro, CA 90731, USA.
It is situated right on S Gaffey Street, a major artery connecting San Pedro to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and other parts of Southern California. The location is easily accessible, featuring critical services for convenience-focused California drivers:

Services Offered

- Handcrafted Donuts: The main attraction, featuring traditional varieties like glazed, cinnamon, and chocolate donuts praised for their rich flavor and texture. Unlike lighter, "air puffed" alternatives, these are dense, satisfying, and made with a focus on old-world perfection.

- Croissant Sandwiches: Savory breakfast sandwiches built around an exceptionally "flaky and crunchy croissant," featuring fillings like sausage, egg, and cheese. Customers rave about the authentic, non-processed quality of these breakfast staples.
- Dessert Options: In addition to donuts, The Donut serves as a Dessert Shop, making it a viable stop for a sweet pick-me-up later in the morning or as a treat to take home.
- Coffee and Beverages: The shop offers Coffee and other drinks, which are highlighted as Great Coffee in customer feedback, ensuring a perfectly paired beverage for your donut or sandwich.
Features / Highlights
The longevity and loyalty surrounding The Donut are built on specific, measurable qualities that separate it from other breakfast and dessert options in Southern California.
- Authentic, Traditional Dough: The most compelling highlight is the donut quality. Customers who appreciate "handcrafted perfection" over factory-style production consider The Donut to be the best available, often comparing the flavor directly to authentic Mexican donuts from central Mexico.
- Superior Breakfast Ingredients: The quality extends beyond the sugar-coated items. The shop uses real, cracked eggs and quality meats (an "actual sausage"), which provides a noticeably better breakfast sandwich experience than many fast-food rivals.
- Exceptional Croissants: The base for the breakfast sandwiches is described as "perhaps the flakiest and crunchiest croissant," demonstrating the bakers' skill and attention to all aspects of the pastry menu.
- Significantly Underpriced for Quality: Patrons are "in awe" that the high quality of the donuts and breakfast items is offered at such reasonable prices, suggesting exceptional value for the discerning California consumer.
- Historical and Nostalgic Vibe: The simple, casual, and old-timey atmosphere provides a comforting, nostalgic backdrop for a quick visit, appealing to those who prefer character and tradition over modern, sterile environments.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing The Donut is a choice to support a local San Pedro landmark that prioritizes quality and tradition over all else. For any California local or visitor, a stop here is an opportunity to taste a donut that is genuinely "done right"—crafted with care and a deep understanding of flavor. It is worth choosing The Donut for two primary reasons, both tied to their commitment to authenticity.
First, you should visit for the Authentic Donuts. The exceptional praise they receive for mimicking the flavor of traditional Mexican donuts speaks volumes. If you are tired of the light, airy texture of mass-produced rings, The Donut offers a substantial, flavorful, and handcrafted alternative that one customer proclaimed to be the "perfect donut" after a decades-long search.
Second, their Savory Croissant Sandwiches are a standout option for a fulfilling breakfast. While some fast-food competitors use pre-made substitutes, The Donut invests in high-quality components: plump, real sausage; genuine cracked egg; and a flaky croissant that is crunchy and perfect. This commitment to real ingredients elevates a simple breakfast sandwich into a true culinary experience, validating the choice to visit an independent shop over a large chain.
While the atmosphere may be simple and the transaction quick, The Donut’s value lies in its product excellence and its role as a piece of San Pedro's history. Patrons should embrace the simple, honest experience—grab your exceptional donut, enjoy your great coffee, and appreciate the value of handcrafted food made with pride. It is a local treasure that deserves every effort to keep it thriving, proving that real quality never goes out of style.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1As someone who goes to donut places or "donut shops", it was sad and disappointing to walk into this shop. The ambiance was great- makes you think of old time donut shops. But in a Saturday morning, there was 2 shelves of poor donuts and not much more than that. The person just gave me donuts and took me money. That's all. It left not wanting to go back.
September 19 · Richard UrangaIf you have ever had a fresh Mexican donut- made and purchased in Mexico-then you'll know right away after tasting their cinnamon, glazed, and chocolate donuts. These are 99.99% like the ones I grew up with in Edo. Mex. and CDMX. I was so happy to have that taste of back home after 30 years of looking for the perfect donut in the US. Some many close imitations but nothing as good as The Donut.Edit: some people commented negatively about their sausage sandwich. First of all, it's perhaps the flakiest and crunchiest croissant, plump and tasty. The sausage is an actual sausage. The egg is a real cracked egg. If you're not ok with this then keep going to McDonald's.If you like air puffed donuts then Krispy Kreme may be for you. If you like handcrafted perfection then come here. They are significantly underpriced and I am just in awe that they don't sell out by 10am. More people need to come here and taste real freaking donuts, done right.
July 22 · Patrick McLaughlinBetter than Krispey Kreme! By far the best donuts I have ever had. I dont know what they put in these things but they are phenomenal! They even let you try before you buy. This is a must visit spot in San Pedro. Please note they are cash only but they have a ATM within the store and they also have a drive through to order donuts. Go here now!
February 02 · Marlon JohnsonThe glaze donut is so good and fresh. It’s cash only but one dozen cost only $18! What a steal for legit donuts.
May 17 · Rachelle PickensThis was my first time at this location. I was craving an apple fritter or croissant and decided to buy one of each and share them with my staff. I asked the lady if they were fresh before she bagged them. She stated that they make them fresh daily. I said sold. When I got to work, we heated the products a little to enjoy them. I'm sorry, I really wanted to love them, but they were not good at all and did not taste fresh. Needless to say, we had to discard them because of their lack of freshness. The store was nostalgic.
