BEWARE! The owner of this Guatemalan bakery is the equivalent to the typical "get off my lawn" type of person that I don't want anything to do with. The owner was NOT welcoming, friendly, or polite. All she wanted was our money and handed out dirty looks throughout our visit. The bread was not that bad, it's not as good as Mexican sweet bread (pan dulce) but it has a pleasant sweetness to it. It's a "bakery'" with not too many options and bagged mayo? Unfortunately, the service left a bad taste in my mouth that affected my overall experience. Also, the inside is giving swap-meet/old lady's house, it needs a remodel. - Lorenzo Warfel

Tikal Bakery II Introduce

California's vibrant cultural landscape is a tapestry woven with influences from around the globe, and the culinary scene in the Inland Empire is no exception. For those in Riverside seeking a truly authentic, unique, and culturally rich bakery experience, Tikal Bakery II stands as a delightful and noteworthy destination. This establishment is much more than a simple bakery; it is a dedicated purveyor of authentic Guatemalan baked goods, offering a distinct flavor profile that sets it apart from the common sweet bread found in other Latin bakeries. Located in a central part of Riverside, Tikal Bakery II invites locals and visitors alike to explore the warmth and tradition of Central American pastry-making.

The primary appeal of Tikal Bakery II is its unwavering commitment to providing a genuine taste of Guatemala right here in Southern California. The bakery’s delightful array of pan dulce and other traditional pastries captures the very essence of Latin flavors, creating an experience that is both comforting and educational for the curious palate. This focus on a specific regional cuisine contributes significantly to the diversity of Riverside’s local food scene, making it a valuable cultural hub for the Guatemalan community and a discovery point for food enthusiasts throughout the Inland Empire. The moment you step in, the air is filled with delightful aromas, a clear indication of fresh, quality products baked with care and attention to detail.

A significant part of the experience here is the opportunity to taste bread, such as the praised pan tostado, that possesses a uniquely Guatemalan flavor. As local patrons have noted, it is important to understand that Guatemalan sweet bread is intentionally different from Mexican pan dulce; comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges—each is fantastic, but they stem from different cultural traditions and recipes. The unique preparation methods and traditional ingredients used at Tikal Bakery II result in a pleasant sweetness and texture distinct from its neighboring cuisines, providing a truly authentic culinary journey. Beyond the specialty baked goods, the bakery also serves as a small specialty food store, stocking a variety of traditional Guatemalan products, including popular sueros (dairy products), Jugos (juices), and other staple items that connect patrons directly to the culture.

What is worth choosing

For any Californian eager to explore the diverse and rich spectrum of Latin American flavors, Tikal Bakery II is definitively worth choosing. Its value proposition is founded on its authenticity and the cultural experience it provides. The most compelling reason to choose this Riverside establishment is the opportunity to try baked goods that you simply cannot find in a standard bakery setting.

You are choosing to support a specialized cultural business that serves a niche yet vital role in the community. Patrons particularly recommend the pan tostado for its authentic flavor and encourage visitors to sample the wide array of pan dulce like the besitos, conchas, and semitas de yema which are baked fresh daily. Furthermore, the chance to pick up authentic Guatemalan grocery items, such as fresh cheese or sueros, alongside your pastries makes this a convenient and culturally complete shopping trip.

The advice from the community is clear: come for the bread, appreciate the cultural authenticity, and understand that you are visiting a dedicated, long-standing local business, not a modernized chain.
