Jersey Bagel Brothers Introduce
For a long time, residents of South Carolina's Upstate who craved an authentic, New Jersey-style bagel had to either rely on a trip back North or settle for a subpar substitute. Thankfully, that changed with the arrival of Jersey Bagel Brothers in Greenville, a local treasure that brings the chewy, crusty, and distinct flavor of a true Northeast bagel right to the heart of the Palmetto State. Opened by brothers Keith and Scott Schumacher, whose quest for a satisfying local bagel led them to recreate the real thing, this establishment is a beacon of authentic Jersey breakfast culture.
More than just a bagel shop, Jersey Bagel Brothers is a cultural experience. It captures the essence of a traditional East Coast deli, providing a nostalgic atmosphere for former New Jersey and New York residents, while introducing the distinctive taste and menu items to the wider South Carolina community. The commitment to authenticity is evident in their process, their menu, and even the "Jersey slang" vocabulary signs that help guide newcomers through terms like "schmear" for cream cheese. This dedication has been overwhelmingly well-received, earning high praise from even the most skeptical New York natives who commend the bagels for being "soft on the inside and a slight crunch on the outside without being toasted."
The fundamental difference lies in the process—the traditional Jersey bagel is known for its distinct texture that is often achieved through a specific baking method. While some competitors may fall flat, Jersey Bagel Brothers delivers on the promise of a truly authentic experience. They focus on keeping the menu simple and high-quality, mirroring the no-fuss, flavor-first philosophy of the best bagel shops in the Northeast. From the classic Poppy Seed to specialty options, every bagel is made on-site, guaranteeing a freshness that is the bedrock of a great bagel. This family-owned business truly takes pride in serving up not just breakfast, but a taste of home and a fun, educational culinary experience for all of Greenville.

The draw of Jersey Bagel Brothers extends beyond just their core product. It’s their commitment to authenticity and specialized offerings that solidifies their position as a unique culinary spot in the Upstate.
- Authentic New Jersey-Style Bagels: The bagels are made on-site and boast the perfect texture—soft and spongey interior with a slight, satisfying exterior crunch, the hallmark of a great Northeast bagel.
- The Famous Taylor Ham: The specialty menu item is the Trenton Taylor Ham (also known as Pork Roll), a regional meat delicacy manufactured solely in Trenton, New Jersey. This unique, salty, and slightly sweet processed pork is an essential ingredient in the authentic Jersey breakfast sandwich.
- Specialty Bagel Varieties: Beyond the classics, they offer less common finds in South Carolina, such as the Bialy (a non-boiled bagel with a depressed center containing onions and poppy seeds) and the Flagel (a flatter bagel with more toppings on the outside).
- House-Made Cream Cheese Spreads: Known locally as "schmear," their spreads include classic Plain Cream Cheese, Nova Scotia Lox Spread, and unique flavors like the highly-praised Cinnamon Sugar Cream Cheese.
- The Full Northeast Deli Experience: The menu extends beyond just bagels to include deli sandwiches, wraps, salads, and Kaiser Rolls—hard rolls often used in the Northeast for egg and deli sandwiches.
- Community Connection: The atmosphere is enhanced by New Jersey-themed memorabilia, maps for guests to pin their hometowns (celebrating both NJ and SC), and vocabulary signs that add a fun, authentic East Coast vibe to the Upstate establishment.

For South Carolina residents seeking a genuinely remarkable breakfast or lunch experience, Jersey Bagel Brothers offers several distinct reasons to choose them. Their ability to deliver on the "authentic Jersey bagel" promise is their biggest selling point, a quality that is rare to find outside of the New Jersey and New York regions. This makes the trip to Pleasantburg Drive an essential part of the local culinary routine, especially for those who appreciate the genuine article.
The single most iconic item worth choosing is the Taylor Ham & Cheese Sandwich (also commonly known as Pork Roll). At just $5.47, it offers a complete and culturally significant taste of New Jersey. This is not just a breakfast sandwich; it is a regional delicacy that is difficult to source and prepare correctly outside its native area. Trying this sandwich is an introduction to an entire East Coast tradition.
Beyond the signature sandwich, local patrons should explore these authentic options:
- The Bagel with Nova Scotia Lox Spread: This is the gold standard of bagel pairings. The quality of the Nova Scotia Lox blended into a fresh, velvety schmear on a chewy, fresh bagel is a true morning indulgence.
- The Cinnamon Sugar Cream Cheese: As noted in customer reviews, this house-made cream cheese is exceptionally popular and provides a delightful, sweet spread that pairs perfectly with a plain or cinnamon raisin bagel.
- The Poppy Seed Bagel (Untoasted): To fully appreciate the quality and freshness of the dough, try a savory bagel flavor like Poppy, Sesame, or Onion, as a New Yorker would—un-toasted—to experience the perfect internal softness and external crunch that the shop has mastered.
- The Flagel or Kaiser Roll: For those looking for a different texture or a bread base for their next sandwich, these items demonstrate the bakery's broader expertise in classic Northeast deli bread items.
Jersey Bagel Brothers successfully transports a beloved piece of Northeast culture to the South Carolina Upstate, promising a high-quality, authentic taste in every bite, whether you're a Jersey transplant or a local looking to try something new.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We tried this place last Saturday morning for breakfast. Tried a pork roll for the first time and tried some other bagels but that cinnamon sugar cream cheese is the best! We can't wait to go back.
April 02 · Greg ChristianBorn and raised in the Bronx, lived in Brooklyn for 10 years, then lived in Staten Island for 26 years. I’ve been to bagel shops all over NYC and Long Island, I know a good bagel with a good “schmear” of cream cheese. I was skeptical because a lot of places down here promise NY or NJ style and fall a little flat. This bagel I had this morning, a poppy seeded masterpiece was absolutely delicious. A freshly made bagel (to me) should be soft on the inside and a slight crunch on the outside without being toasted. This was that! My only complaint was that all or most of the poppy seeds fell to the plate, no biggie as I put on enough cream cheese to scoop them back onto the end. I saw they also make “flagels” and there has been no one making them better than my favorite place on Avenue X in Brooklyn. I promise to try your flagel next time and bring home a Kasier roll as long as I see poppy seeds on it. Great bagels so far.
May 25 · luvmybeemerIf you’re missing the places you came from, yeah, New Yorkers, Jersey people, I’m talking to you! Every bagel is perfect! This family knows bagels. If you have to chance to stop in, DON’T fuhget about it! If you’re going on the weekend GO EARLY! And grab a dozen to take home because you’re going to want more.
April 02 · teira BrownAs someone from NJ who lives out of state, I rarely put a lot of faith in a bagel even comparing to the ones I’m used to at home. However, I was in town for a wedding and was suggested this place. Automatically walking in the door I felt as if I was in NJ bagel shop. Especially because they offer TAYLOR HAM, not pork roll lol. My taylor ham egg and cheese was so good I was genuinely taken aback. I would come back to Greenville for these bagels alone. Amazing!!
March 30 · Mackenzie ZusiJersey Bagel Brothers is my fav spot! It is so delicious and consistently is a highlight of my week. I normally get the Taylor ham and egg sandwich and every bagel I have tried has been amazing. They also have a very kind couple who sells baked goods on the weekends and they are by far some of the best pastries I have ever eaten. Would highly recommend!
