Nomadic Pies Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents across Chester County and the wider Pennsylvania region, Nomadic Pies in historic Kennett Square stands out as a unique and celebrated local bakery. What began in 2012 as a popular farmers' market food truck has since transitioned into a permanent brick-and-mortar storefront, establishing itself as a dedicated haven for artisanal pies, both sweet and savory. Nomadic Pies is far more than a traditional bakery; it is a culinary experience built on a deep commitment to local agriculture and seasonal ingredients.
Owner Molly Johnston's vision was to bake soul-warming, award-winning pies, and this has resonated deeply with the local community. The bakery has garnered a loyal following for its exceptional quality, with a constantly evolving menu that reflects the best of what local farmers have to offer. The concept is centered on the versatility and creativity of pie, transforming humble ingredients into impressive and comforting meals or desserts. This dedication to quality and local sourcing helps sustain the local economy and ensures that every bite is as fresh as possible, connecting the consumer directly to the bounty of Southern Chester County.
Customers visiting Nomadic Pies can expect a nostalgic and rustic atmosphere, often greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly baked goods. The shop focuses on making pie accessible for all occasions, offering a wide array of choices from individual slices for a quick visit to full-sized pies and quiches perfect for family dinners, gatherings, or holiday meals. The bakery is particularly well-known for its flaky, delightful crust, a consistent point of praise from long-time patrons who often feature the pies at all of their holiday meals.
While the commitment to hand-crafting and quality is evident, as with any artisanal food process, occasional inconsistencies can occur. Customer feedback suggests that the high standard for products like the quiches is generally met, but on rare occasions, preparation issues, such as sticking to the tray, can be a temporary disappointment. However, the overall community sentiment remains highly positive, reinforcing Nomadic Pies' reputation as a local treasure for those seeking elevated comfort food.

What is Worth Choosing
For local users in Pennsylvania looking to experience the best of Nomadic Pies, the focus should be on their signature strengths: the savory creations and seasonal fruit pies.
The Savory Pot Pies are arguably the bakery’s greatest claim to fame. These are often described as the ultimate comfort food, with a flaky crust that stands up to the hearty, flavorful fillings. For a first-time visit, a classic like the Chicken Pot Pie or the highly-praised Steak-Mushroom-Gruyere pie is an excellent choice. Those with an adventurous palate should seek out their more unique offerings, such as the Red Thai Curry pie, which exemplifies the bakery’s innovative approach to comfort food.
Secondly, their Fruit Pies are worth choosing, particularly because of the commitment to seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The fillings change based on the local harvest, meaning you’re getting the freshest, most vibrant flavors. Customers rave about the quality of the fruit and the balanced sweetness, such as the Apple Crumb Pie. These are perfect for holiday tables and family gatherings, and pre-ordering for peak seasons like Thanksgiving and Christmas is highly recommended, as they are a featured item at many local holiday meals.
Finally, the Quiches and Hand Pies offer great everyday value. A slice of the 9" Quiche provides a perfect brunch or lunch option, featuring local eggs and dairy. While a full quiche order requires careful handling to avoid the reported stickiness issue, the flavor combinations (e.g., Bacon-Caramelized Onion-Gruyere, or a seasonal Chef's Choice) are consistently engaging. The smaller Hand Pies are ideal for a quick, portable, savory lunch on the go. Even the cookies, such as the Honey Lavender variety, have developed a cult following, proving that every item on the menu is thoughtfully crafted. By choosing items that reflect the bakery’s seasonal, local-first philosophy, customers are guaranteed to enjoy a truly authentic and high-quality Kennett Square baking experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1As a frequent customer, I was very disappointed with my last order. We ordered the tomato corn cheddar quiche and the quiche was completely stuck to the tray and was unable to be taken out without completely falling apart. It was as if someone had forgotten to butter the tray, as we usually don’t experience this with their quiches. Truly such a bummer for a $30 quiche.
August 12 · Lauren KaneHave been going for years. Her fruit pies ate featured at all holuday meals. The crust is delightful. My recent order included a hand pie, mini fruit pies and cookies. I loved the cookies, my fav is honey lavende. So addictive. Would prefer if they were smaller.
August 28 · Barbara RitzCame the Mushroom event and my wife without me being with her purchased two pies. I will not review and say they were not good but 11.00 for two key hole size items. A total disgrace. Would never ever purchase again. It was her fault…did not realize until too late. Total total rip of company. Never recommend.
September 07 · Robert BohrerWe stopped in on a Saturday med-afternoon after hearing how good these pies are. We got a small apple crumb pie and a cookie to go. Sorry no pic of the cookie but rest assured it was very good. The staff were all friendly. The place was cute. We took the pie home but didn’t eat it right away and it was still very good after a couple of days. The apples were local and tasted fresh. We liked that the pie was not overly sweetened. We would return to try another flavor. I’m sure her savory pies are delicious.
March 08 · Miss ValStopped in and bought 2 Chicken Pot Pies for dinner. They were pricey at $15 each for the size of a small Marie Calendar Pie. But, WOW, were they tasty, and much more filling. If you want to try a "real" pot pie instead of the frozen stuff we have gotten used to, this is the place to go. Yum.
