Ess-a-Bagel Introduce
ess a bagel 3rd ave
When you think of New York City, certain foods immediately come to mind, and a freshly baked bagel is at the top of that list. Ess-a-Bagel is not just a bagel shop; it is a quintessential New York experience. For over four decades, it has been serving up what many consider to be the city's finest bagels, building a reputation that extends far beyond the five boroughs. This is a place where tradition meets quality, and the simple perfection of a classic bagel is celebrated daily. As a local, you know the value of a perfectly chewy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside bagel, and Ess-a-Bagel delivers that experience with every single bite. This article will serve as your guide to this iconic establishment, detailing its history, its renowned offerings, and what makes it such a beloved part of the New York culinary landscape. We’ll cover everything from its convenient Midtown East location to the generous portions that make it worth the price. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer looking to taste a true New York legend, Ess-a-Bagel is a must-visit destination that promises a delicious and memorable meal.
Ess-a-Bagel's location at 831 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10022, is a key part of its success and accessibility for the local community. Situated in the bustling Midtown East neighborhood, it is a prime spot for both residents and professionals working in the area. The location is incredibly convenient, surrounded by numerous office buildings, residential high-rises, and major transportation options. It is easily accessible via several subway lines and numerous bus routes, making it a simple stop on a morning commute or a midday errand run. The shop’s presence on 3rd Avenue ensures high visibility and easy access for anyone navigating the area. While the central location is a major benefit, it also means that the store can get incredibly busy, particularly during peak hours. As one customer noted, arriving early on a Sunday morning can help you avoid the crowds and get your order right away. For those who visit during busier times, the option of taking food to go is a popular choice, as the shop’s seating is limited. This is a trade-off many New Yorkers are willing to make for a quality bagel, and the flow of customers in and out of the shop is a testament to its popularity and prime location.
Ess-a-Bagel offers a wide array of services and products, but its menu is built around the star of the show: the bagel.
Freshly Baked Bagels: The foundation of their business is their daily baked bagels. Customers can choose from a variety of plain and flavored bagels, all known for their dense, chewy texture and fresh taste.
Customizable Bagel Sandwiches: The shop allows for extensive customization. You can choose your bagel and then add a wide range of fillings, from classic cream cheese and butter to full-on breakfast and deli-style sandwiches.
Famous Smoked Salmon and Spreads: Ess-a-Bagel is renowned for its smoked salmon and other classic bagel toppings. The smoked salmon bagel sandwich is a customer favorite, highly praised for its quality and flavor. They also offer a vast selection of homemade cream cheeses and other spreads.
Specialty Sandwiches: Beyond the traditional options, the menu includes specialty sandwiches like the "RUEBEN FUSION," which one customer highlighted for its sufficient pastrami portion and great taste, making it a worthwhile purchase.
Coffee and Drinks: To complete the meal, the shop offers a selection of coffee and other beverages. While one customer pointed out that the iced and regular coffee lines can be confusing, it's a necessary service to pair with their delicious food.
Several features and highlights make Ess-a-Bagel stand out as a beloved institution in the New York food scene.
Quality and Freshness: The core of Ess-a-Bagel’s reputation is its commitment to quality. The bagels are baked fresh, and while a customer noted that some left out for a while can be a bit hard, the freshly made ones are consistently excellent.
Generous Portions: As noted in a customer review, the portions are often generous and feel "sufficient and worth the price." This is a significant draw, especially for a city where value can sometimes be hard to find.
Bright and Clean Environment: The shop’s environment is described as "clean & bright," which contributes to a positive customer experience, making the wait feel more comfortable.
Wide Variety: The sheer number of options for bagels, spreads, and fillings means that every customer can create a personalized meal that perfectly suits their tastes.
A True New York Staple: The bakery has become an iconic part of New York life, a place where generations of families have come for their bagel fix. This historical and cultural significance adds to its charm and appeal for locals.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I arrived at around 6:15am on a Sunday in May. It might be because it just opened, so there were few customers in the restaurant, and I could order right away.I ordered RUEBEN FUSION (USD 15). The bagel portion was about the same size as expected, and I felt that the Pastrami portion was sufficient and worth the price. The Pastrami paired with two flavors of cheese brought out the salty taste of the beef. It is worth coming to this store to buy bagels for breakfast (if there are few customers). The bagels sold in the restaurant can be customized to add the types of food you like to taste. The restaurant environment is clean & bright, and there are not many spaces/ seats inside. You can imagine that if you come to buy during peak hours, you should have to queue up and spend some time to buy it. Be prepared to avoid affecting the experience of buying bagels. Or you can consider taking it out.
June 16 · Tseng SimmonThis place is already well-known for its bagels, and as expected, the smoked salmon bagel sandwich was really good. The freshly made bagels were tasty too, but the ones that had been sitting out for a while were a bit dry and hard, so I wasn’t sure they were anything special. When I ordered something to eat in and also wanted to buy some bagels to go, I had to go back to the pickup area to place and collect the to-go order, which was a bit of a hassle. The flow inside the store could definitely be better. Also, there’s no clear sign showing that the line for iced coffee is different from the regular coffee, so people end up walking back and forth — kind of confusing. Hope they improve that part.
June 30 · perle75nycEss-a-Bagel on 3rd Ave definitely lives up to the hype… sorta. The line was out the door and, while the bagel breakfast sandwiches were good, they weren’t exactly “wait 20 minutes while questioning your life choices” good. However — the plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese? Game-changer. Totally worth the wait. Sweet, tangy, fresh — like a little pink cloud of happiness slapped between perfect carbs. I’d wait again just for that.
April 25 · Adam JonesOh my, I haven't had a NY bagel in a long time. This is so delicious, soft, and tasty. They wrap the bagel so perfectly. There is counter seating and a few tables. Worth a try but know what you want to get before you get to the windows. They are quick to take your order and serve it quick as well.
June 19 · AnnaMarieOverall mostly hype. I came here one morning and the line was out the door. I waited over 30+ min to place my order. I got the nova lova. They are generous with the filling though. I could only eat half and share and be full. Overall it was just ok though, definitely not worth the wait. I came here again for lunch one day, no line. I got the Reuben with pastrami. Again super huge portions, good but overall nothing to write home about. I also added a "24 oz" iced coffee that was filled up the very top with ice, so I probably got 10 oz of coffee at best. After tax and tip it was a $30 meal which is pretty outrageous. Also their definition of a "toasted" bagel is very different from mine. I want it browned and crispy, it just comes out warm with zero browning and still very soft. Overall after trying this place twice I don't really feel like I'll ever crave to come here again, and especially not in the morning when there's a wait.
