★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Sure, they have delicious pastries, but you pay a price for it, and I'm not talking just $. They have the strangest way of doing business, which is unnecessarily complicated & confusing. I have never experienced this before & I'm not young & have eaten in many countries including Germany. They charge 2 different prices for eat in & take out. Take out is cheaper, no plate to wash, no bringing it to your table. I told them I wanted to eat some of it there, with my friends, & take the rest home. That apparently wasn't possible, so I had to wait until I was leaving for them to hand me my pastry. We also did NOT understand that the 2 German businesses which are in the same building and have the same entrance have different owners! I saw the sign saying no outside food, which I assumed meant from Safeway or something. I proceeded to bring my bag of drinks from the deli (the other store) to share with my friends at the bakery side. No No! 2 of my friends use canes and needed to sit down as the line was slow. That's another No No! Can't sit at a table until you pay & then THEY will seat you when they get to you. The last of our No Nos! was when my friend saw the waitress serving someone else coffee & asked if she could have some. She waited & waited but it didn't come. She finally asked about it & there was confusion about they didn't have her order & the waitress went back to confirm with her coworkers. Then an older German woman came out and loudly, bending over the table towards my friend, proclaimed "You did not pay! You did pay. There is no order!.We clearly & obviously were new to the place, as they should have recognized and were doing our best. We'd been texting about going here, (to both businesses) for quite some time. We left with a sour taste in our mouths & I dare say none of us will return.I gave 2* instead of 1 as some of it may have been due to the language barrier, which I doubt.
September 10 · Linda PomeroyBest pastry i had the soup is the best too...i their fresh brewed coffee is the best....
July 23 · Renelyn BangertI’ve been a loyal customer for 40 years, but after my last visit I won’t be back. I brought my nieces (one of them disabled) and had them sit quietly while I waited in line. An employee came out angry, loudly scolded us, and kept yelling even after I complied. She offered to get the manager, but then continued shouting over me while I tried to speak with them — and the manager did nothing to stop it.What should have been a special memory for my nieces turned into an upsetting experience. Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. I’ll keep going to the deli (they’re wonderful), but the bakery has lost my business.
August 29 · Alexis KingPlease Note: the 5-star rating takes into consideration that this is an old-fashioned, German style coffee shop. It is a different kind of experience than most of us are used to.It is NOT a modern-American-style business model. They make a certain amount of soup or pastries, and when they are out, they are out for the day rest of the day. And the fact that they run out by 1:30 pm sometimes - tells you that it must be good!! Come back tomorrow, a little earlier. They make their sandwiches a certain way, with a few, very simple ingredients, and few modifications can be made. So don’t expect them to do everything “your way”.Think of a family that has invited you in, to share a meal in their home, at their table. It is a host-and -guest kind of relationship, not a business -and -consumer type of relationship. So, sit back and relax. Slow down, and enjoy a simple cup of coffee, and a simpler way of life.I love this place!!
December 12 · John GollingI had the flakiest Struddle of my life maybe. Grew up in Germany as a brat.Just moved to work in Lakewood. There was no rush when I got there. So no line to wait through. Atmosphere is a bit like a sterile cafeteria, would love.more of a cafe vibe.Regardless, not disappointed in the food so far, or the sandwhiches and pretzels from next door.
